Re: Galaxy Note 2 - trying to Sync

I have no idea if this will work in an S III, but it works in an S II (at least, in mine). In my S II it is possible to switch the mode a USB connection uses.

I do this via Idle screen Menu > Settings > Wireless & Network > More...(settings) > USB Utilities > Set USB Cable Connection Mode. I have to start the process with the USB cable disconnected, insert it after stage 1 of the process, then click about 3 OK confirmations! But it does work once I figured it out. I get Mass-Storage access to the storage area of the phone and my 32GB SD card (separate drive letters for each)

This was available in ICS, (not sure about Gingerbread: I updated to ICS before I got to this issue) and it still works with my current OS version 4.0.3* - but it may be model-specific also, so not work with an S III (which I don't have). But it can't hurt to look, likewise for other Android devices. Something similar may exist.

Your options may be very different (or, not there). I mention only as 'food for thought', in that at least one Android device can do this, so it may be worth researching about yours.

* I deliberately haven't updated recently, in case they removed this (it does feel like a 'policy decision' - who knows how far-reaching they'd try to make it?), and I got bored trying to find anything that listed what the latest updates actually add (or take away...). I did update Kies, and it immediately lost all possibility of connecting to the phone over USB at all (MTP or DLA/MSC - something to do with a broken bespoke Samsung USB driver), and I had to rip Kies off the machine wholesale and jump though some other hoops to get it back. So far I'm not inclined to re-install Kies...
