Just to get the full picture (I realised I forgot some parts)
There's no edit required to use VSS (if it can be used at all) for normal copying, but there is an optional setting to tell it not to try on
Modify > Expert > Copy/Delete > Advanced > 'Do not use the Volume Shadow...'
Plus, there is a default mode where it doesn't try if using Compression - on the (um) Compression settings page: as per the contextual Help (press F1 with page open)
Try and compress files that are being used: By default any file that is being used will not be copied. This is done to avoid corruption, i.e. a file could be changed by another program while a compressed version of it is being created. Enable this option to ignore this safe-guard
But if you're copying from a remote/external (non-internal) source, all bets are off, unless you install on each such machine, sorry.
