They don't do so spontaneously (no such code exists, except the code that supports manual editing, complete with 'Are you sure?' prompts). For example, there's no code to handle doing so via command-line (you could delete the Group, or delete the individual profile (altogether) that way, but not the link/pointer inside the Group to the actual profile: that can only be done manually)
I can only think you are somehow getting corruption of the INI file that represents the Group (and contains a list of member profile names as links)
