Thanks so much for taking the time to explore this problem and make suggestions. I really appreciate it.
I was trying to upload to a directory I'd created on the virtual drive (but not the share one). However, following your tip, I tried uploading directly to the root, and it worked -- with the qualifications you mention. It's achingly slow, but I assume that's down to my isp and the service's bandwidth. I'll do a full backup (which looks as if it will take days!) and then see how long increments take.
I think I can live with relying on just using file size for the incremental backups, though I realize it will miss some small changes.
Once again, thanks for your help. I've explored several backup apps and SyncBack is by far the best.
