The FAQ on versioning says there may be a performance hit:
Can you provide more details about when copying will happen?
My situation: I am using smart sync between my laptop and my office computer to keep files in sync. The single root directory is the same on both sides. I am connecting to the office via Windows networking. Some of the files are rather large. I would like the safety of versioning (since I have already messed up more than once) but I don't want to copy the replaced file back and forth across the network.
Thanks...

Q: Does versioning affect performance?
A: Normally it has a very small effect on performance. SyncBackSE has been developed to make versions as quickly as possible. However, there are cases where a version cannot be made quickly (i. e. the file to be replaced or deleted has to be copied, instead of being moved, in which case it can affect performance if the file is large).
