Thanks Dave - yeah, I was aware of the possibility of differences between the drives is something changed between when the first one and the second one were written to, but you answered that part of the question.

As for not being able to lock multiple drives to the same letter - you are right that currently, up through "K" is in use, but I could have sworn I had done this before with a gap between the assigned letter for a removable drive and the end of the regular list of drives. As for shooting myself in the foot, I've done that enough times that I invested in steel toed shoes :lol:
Clearly I need to research that so as to prevent future "excitement". It had been my understanding that windows associates a drive "serial number" with a letter in a registry key and there could be multiple ones for the same letter as long as both are not installed at the same time (we have actually run into a situation like that in the past where a USB drive got it's "letter" assigned before the network mapped drives were mounted resulting in the USB drive "vanishing" under the network drive (and if you didn't have admin rights, you could not easily fix the issue).
