This is a great program but it's complicated. I use Acronis to do a backup from PC drive C: to 1 of 2 (2TB) external drives (E:). I also store photos, videos, games, music, and programs on these drives. The 2nd drive (F:) is a backup for the 1st (E:). What's the best method for keeping E: and F: the same and avoiding data loss?
I recently had an issue with drive E:. Connected it to a new Windows 7 machine to install a few itunes files and Windows check disk popped up saying it detected and scanned E: for errors. Then I plugged E: back into my old XP machine and got "Drive is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." Right clicked drive properties, showed file system is RAW (was NTFS before) and 0 MB used and free space. I ran a regular check disk and that didn't fix it so I ran a cmd chkdsk E: /f /r and it corrected errors and I lost some data.
What happens if a drive gets corrupted or loses data, does SyncBack not run or prevent it from happening to the 2nd drive? I have a E: to F: mirror upon shutdown profile set up and manually stopped it after this problem happened but what happens if I don't realize a drive has errors or stop the profile in time? Hopefully there's a failsafe method.
Another issue is Windows changing my drive letters after I unplug drives and plug them into other computers and back. If you forget to plug them back in the correct order, this mixup can cause a major problem with a mirror profile that deletes files, and files you want to keep getting deleted. I had a close call. I read that the paid version ties profiles to drive serial numbers so this issue can't happen, is this correct?
