Are you referring to this setting:
Preferences menu (from main window) > Options > Stop background backups from starting
Is yours disabled when you update your software? Mine has always been disabled (un-checked) even though I update to the latest version.
Note that it is also possible to enable this option via
Bottom-right corner > Notification area > right-click on SyncBackPro icon > Stop background backups from starting
