I was under the impression that inclusion/exclusion filters are intended to be applied after manually selected folder list. However, when I change the exclusion filter, SB presents me with a barrage of dialog windows telling me that the new filter will now include some folders that I previously manually unchecked in the folder list. This is a rather weird behavior, which probably means that I misunderstand something about how it is supposed to work.
Consider this example. I have a folder named 'D:\Data', which contains sub-folders
D:\Data\Documents
D:\Data\Pictures
D:\Data\Junk
D:\Data\Nonsense
D:\Data\Garbage
I want to backup only 'D:\Data\Documents' and 'D:\Data\Pictures'. So, I specify 'D:\Data' as the source. Then in sub-folder list I check 'D:\Data\Documents' and 'D:\Data\Pictures' and uncheck 'D:\Data\Junk', 'D:\Data\Nonsense' and 'D:\Data\Garbage'. So far so good.
I also want to prevent '*.tmp' files from being backed up regardless of where they reside. So, I go to the exclusion filter and make '*\*.tmp' the only entry on the exclusion side. (I just clear out the other exclusions, since they don't apply anyway.)
However, when I hit OK in the filter dialog, it tells me that my current filter settings seem to want to include the 'D:\Data\Junk' location. Then it tells me the same about 'D:\Data\Nonsense' location. And then the same about 'D:\Data\Garbage' location.
Well, I understand that the filter setting per se do indeed allow these locations (there's no dedicated exclusion for them in the filter), but why is SB telling me this? Why is SB trying to treat the filter that way? Why does SB check the filter settings against the manually selected folder set instead of quietly keeping to honor the manually made folder selections?
Even if someone might find such suggestions after changing the filters useful, I'd prefer to have them turned off. I.e. I want my manual folder selections to remain as I made them: no suggestions from SB. Is there an option for this that I'm missing?
