SyncBackPro (commercial) • Re: Confusing backup help please

Hi,

1. To start SyncBackPro upon the start of user’s Windows session, you may have to enable the option ‘Start with Windows’ from the Preferences > Options > Easy settings page.

2. You can create a schedule task for your profile under:

Modify > Expert > When > Edit Schedule settings page

enable the ‘Daily’ option and set the start date and time(1:00 PM/5:00 PM) according to your requirement. Set the option ‘Recur Every’ to 1 day, to run the profile every day at your configured schedule time. Note that the option to run the task after a scheduled task is missed(for example: when the PC is powered off completely) is enabled by default under: When > Edit Schedule > Misc tab > 'Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed'.

With the Misc. tab dialog window opened, press F1 to open the contextual Help to read more info about this setting. Please note that these are all settings in the Windows Task Scheduler(WTS). We provide a drill-down into the WTS interface to make it easier for you to create/configure a Scheduled Task.

3. Note that SyncBack by default copies only new/changed files from the last backup. You can refer to this KB article for more details:

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... nged-files

4. You can read this KB article to configure the schedule task to shut down the computer after the profile has been run via Windows Task Scheduler:

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... a-schedule

Thank you.

SyncBack Touch • Files are only copied not moved

Hi,

I am using SyncBack Touch to backup certain picture files (.dng) from my phone (Nexus 5, Android 5.1.1) to my PC (Win 8.1 x64, Syncback Pro v7.3.4.0). The profile is setup to move the files from the phone to the computer "Files only on NEXUS are moved to Destination". This used to work fine but not anymore although nothing was changed. Files are just copied and remain on the phone.

Any ideas what the problem might be and how to solve it?

Thank you in advance
Oliver

Hi,

You may need to generate a Support Zip with debug log for your profile and send it over to us for investigation.

Submit a support ticket by using the Contact Support in the below link in this article and attach the zip.
http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... ation-file

If your Zip is over 30MB, contact us for alternate instructions, advising the actual size. Do not try to attach to the ticket!

Do not post (nor links to) Support Zips on this open forum.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Install or remote run

I am backing up a couple hundred gigs for a migration project from server 03 to 12. I am running from a central server and doing a fast backup. The problem is the time for this initial copy. It is taking DAYS to get the files from one to another server.

Would it be quicker to install SynBackPro to one of the servers involved in the copy? Why does it take so long?
What are my best options for backup an sync later?

Thanks

Hi, I'm guessing (because you haven't actually stated) that servers 03 & 12 are 'local' to each other ('LAN', with ample bandwidth), but are remote to the 'central server' (i.e. the latter 'inter-site' comms are 'WAN')? If so, you're probably forcing the process (SB) running on the central server to scan and copy by reading (pulling) data up what may be a very narrow pipe from Source (03?) to 'centre' and to read from (scan) and write back to (copy/push) the Destination (12?) over the same narrow pipe. Given that's possibly the slowest connection (narrowest pipe) in this particular three-way topology, and you're forcing SB to ask Windows to use (and time-slice) it for 'all operations at once', it's likely going to be very slow.

OTOH, if you install SB on the Source server (03?), that machine will be able to read its own files internally as fast as the hard disk can deliver the data, and write/push data to the Destination (12?) over a local network connection that (1) may be much faster anyway and (2) without having to compete for bandwidth with all the read/pull traffic over what may be quite a narrow 'pipe' (WAN). I would imagine (depending on the relevant speeds) the improvement will be somewhere between 'significant' and 'dramatic'.

Note that you'd need to install on whichever server is Source if you want to maintain Fast Backup settings, as you can't use Fast Backup on a copy of SB installed on the Destination (the idea of Fast Backup is to sidestep - on run-2 and later* - the need to scan the remote Destination).

Be aware that Fast Backup has no effect whatsoever on the actual copy speed; it can only improve scan time. But if you need to compare (for example) 1,000,000 files to find out which 25 are new/different since last run, being able to skip scanning one side (which may be a remote/slow resource) altogether will sidestep what may be a huge percentage of the overall run-time required, and thus by 'knock-on effect' can dramatically improve the overall backup time. Hence it is called Fast Backup, and not Fast Copy...

* the first run of (or a Rescan of) a Fast Backup is a set-up run, and will take as long as it would without FB being configured at all. The benefits come on run-2-and-later, unless/until you Force Rescan. See the Help on Fast Backup settings page for more background, also the numerous KB articles (searching on 'fast' should find all of them). One caveat you must be aware of is that Fast Backup must only** be used to sidestep scanning a Destination whose contents are not changed by any other process, person or profile (it must be a pure backup, where only the single/unique Fast Backup profile changes anything on that Destination path). Hence, you cannot use FB for two-way sync, and SB won't let you try.

** except in very special circumstances which are outside the scope of this situation.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • [Failed] (Internal Error) - Cannot scan compressed file: Access violation

Good morning!

I'm using SyncBackPro V7.3.3.6 and I'm getting the following error from one of my backup profiles:

"Cannot scan compressed file: Access violation at address 0040C8A6 in module 'SyncBackPro.exe'. Read of address 07A65000"

It appears that a similar error is listed for each folder and file in the source. The only difference is sometimes the hexidecimal addresses change.

I have 7 profiles running on this installation all using the same settings and backing up from/to the same source/destination. The only difference I see is that, for the profile in question, the zip file is fairly large (18GB). That said, I have another profile whose zip file is 14GB and I' not having an issue there.

In researching in the forum there doesn't appear to be a file size limit. I'm using NTFS and SyncBackPro version.

Any ideas where I can look to resolve this?

Thanks in advance!

SyncBackFree (freeware) • SyncBack V7.3.4.0 copy error message

$

Hi,
Yesterday I upgraded SyncBackFree from V7.3.3.6 to V7.3.4.0 and encountered a problem while running a backup profile that I use to copy folders to a new location. I was copying a folder from one external drive to another. The Source was W:\Gibas AVI Videos and the Destination was V:\Video Library\Timeless DVD Original AVI Videos. The Destination folder was new and empty. I found the following message in the copy log. "Failed to copy from Source: The copy is not identical to the original. The original file may have been modified after it was copied", 8,"E". The file involved was \VHS-C Tapes\VHS-C 7 - 11-5-92 Bryan 3rd birthday.avi.

I didn't get the message when I ran a simulation run prior to the actual run. This was the only file out of 63 files that received the message. I reran the simulation, and it indicated the file with the error message would be copied. I ran the profile again, and the copy of the file worked. I have the logs for both runs of the profile. Are you aware of any problems that could have caused the error message?

Gary

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Re: SyncBack V7.3.4.0 copy error message

You obviously have Verify option configured (note that this only comes into effect if anything is actually copied/written, so a Simulated Run won't trigger it, as ipso facto a simulation doesn't actually copy anything, so no 'other' copy to compare exists)

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... -correctly

As per the KB, it can't be pinned down which 'side' is 'wrong' (if any - could have simply been changed* on Source as KB mentions), only that the two files (one each side) did not match when their hash values were calculated after the copy was written. The fact that a 2nd run had no issues could indicate that the first run mis-wrote the copy (which could be a hardware** issue) or that the Source did change once (causing the 1st mismatch) but didn't change again since, so now they match on the 2nd attempt (because the Source didn't change again and there were in fact no copy/read/write errors in the equation either run)

Unfortunately, there's no way to pin down now which is (was) the case. It would probably be a good idea to do a CHKDSK on both devices in case there are any error conditions developing which you may be able to 'nip in the bud' before they get worse.

Note: if you had Safe Copy enabled, the hashing would have been between the Source copy and the SC temp file (on Destination), which would have been discarded if the Verify failed (so, nothing permanently stored on V: in respect of that file). Hence, next run, that file would have been detected as Source-only again - thus, the repeat copy attempt, which worked.

* any background changes to files detected by hashing are often media files, and may be the result of media players (or media-indexing functions) silently changing file content (as opposed to the file's metadata, which wouldn't affect Verify results) slightly to record that it is now indexed, when it was last-played, and so on.

** yes, it could also be a software glitch but bear in mind that 'software' also includes Windows itself (SB simply 'decides' what to copy, then passes Windows the paths\file-name(s) in a request to 'copy that from there to there; signal back when complete') and also the device drivers, USB infrastructure, etc.

I can log into this server from a Filezilla client on the same PC.
I can also log into this server from SyncbackPro on a different test PC I setup to troubleshoot this.
Both PCs are on the same network, both PCs have the same credentials (triple checked), both PCs have firewall disabled.
Both FTP settings are IDENTICAL in SyncBack.

I am at a bit of a loss.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • problems with renamed files and deleted files while syncing

I mainly work for the D drive (local drive) and the work is backed up on the NAS drive (network drive), however I cannot use the mirror function because some people from my project works from the NAS.
While using the Synchronize option I'm having trouble with files that I delete from the my D drive.
Instead of those file getting deleted on the NAS drive the program wants to Copy them from the NAS back to the D. It does not take in consideration that the newest update was deleting the file. Does it have a way of fixing this?
I also have the same problem when I rename a file, it does not "sees" a rename instead sees as a new file and wants to copy back the older name file to the drive.

thanks

I tried to change the schedule for a backup group to a different time. Previously it ran at 10:00 AM daily, and I changed it to run at 12:00 AM (midnight). It displays correctly in the schedule (under "Next Run") as 12:00 AM, however it still continues to run every day at 10:00 AM! I tried deleting the schedule and recreating it again, but the old 10 AM schedule still persists. It appears that the old schedule exists outside of SB somewhere, as I can't view it, edit it, or delete it. How can I get rid of it?

All Schedules are in fact Windows objects, known as (Windows) Scheduled Tasks, objects in the Windows Task Scheduler. SB simply provides a drill-down to the WTS service to semi-automate the creation and/or administration of the Tasks. Sounds like one of your Tasks is now corrupt, in which case there will probably be nil SB can do about it. You may need to try and delete it manually via the WTS's own user-interface

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... duled-jobs

If manually deleting the Task from the WTS UI fails, you probably need to Google "cannot delete scheduled task" or similar.

There are lots of other 2BS KB articles referencing WTS - a KB search on "schedule", "scheduled" & "scheduler" will find them all.

Hi, are they both using the same version of Windows and SyncBackPro? It's a new error to me as well and I couldn't find anything doing a Google search nor could I find anything on the forums or support tickets. At a guess I would think it's a problem with the SSL DLL's. If so, you could fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling.

Hi, actually, this is how it already works. If you're running SyncBack from an external drive then it will only load the profiles and settings from the external drive itself. I just did a test and for me it only picks up the profiles from the USB key. This means that for some reason Windows doesn't see your USB drive as external.

After some trail-and-error, i found out this option was causing it. I am using data center in Oregon, United States. Syncback help file indicates this new feature is required by the newer data center. Could this be the problem? Another strange thing is that, i tested this new profile with a smaller folder (300MB) before and it went well. The new folder i am syncing is about 90GB. That's the only difference i can tell.
