Hello forum

I would simply like to know how to define a retention period either in max GB or days for my backup profile. Is that possible?
I can't seem to find anything about it.

Regards
Joe

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Detect Changes to Folder -> Copy to Dest

I have a folder with several million files. I would like to perform a 1 time sync to my backup folder - then set SBpro to copy files from the source to the dest when it detects changes to the source (ie new file added, file updated). I don't want it to scan each time just toss the file into the dest when it is created - without regard to what is in the dest at the time (ie, overwrite it every time). What's interesting is if i set up a test of 2 folders - it will sync them 'real time' as expected. If i deleted files from the dest folder, and add a new file to the source, I get ALL files in the source copied over to the dest again. So it must be comparing the 2 folders. With millions of files I can not see that working well.

I just want a dumb - detect the new file in source - copy to dest - profile.

What am I doing wrong on the setup?

Nothing - it's simply not supported. SB doesn't do 'blind copying'. This topic (mainly the 2014 reconfirmation from 2BS) has more background. SB is designed to populate two lists (representing Source & Destination) and distill from them a list of Differences which drives the rest of the logic (applying your Decision rules, etc.) There's simply no logic to do it any other way than 'by comparison'.

For a standard* local or networked Destination resource (e.g. USB disk, NAS, etc), you could probably create a (non-archival) Fast Backup profile which makes a database of the contents of the Destination on run-1, then on run-2-and-later loads the database into the comparison logic (instead of scanning the Destination disk again). Depending on your system topology/bandwidth, this may be significantly faster than scanning the Destination disk itself, but any speed gain does rely on you not Forcing Rescan of the Destination. This in turn means making independent changes to the Destination contents - without a Rescan - can be dangerous, because the profile won't know about them and may thus make incorrect decisions. An FB profile will update its database with regard to changes SB made to the Destination itself, but not with regard to any changes you make on that side (unless you Rescan).

But, there's no way of avoiding scanning the actual Source (to populate the comparison logic), so if that's too slow for you, you may need a different strategy or product.

* Fast Backup can't be used with some non-standard resources - for example, most consumer-level Cloud services are not compatible with FB. More info on the contextual help page for Fast Backup

Hi,

You haven't stated SyncBackPro's version that you are using but we have released a new beta which you can download from:
http://www.2brightsparks.com/assets/sof ... _Setup.exe

Do not uninstall and reinstall the existing version otherwise you'll lose your profiles & settings. Just install 'over the top'.

Yes, you are right about this being a problem on their side. This new version spends more time trying to figure out if a file has been properly uploaded to Amazon Cloud Drive before throwing a failure error. You see, the problem with large files and ACD is that sometimes their server throws a HTTP 400 error at us even if the file has been uploaded successfully so SyncBackPro needs to spend time waiting to see if the file appears in the file listing or not. Recently things started getting worse as it seems we need to wait longer till the uploaded file appears.

Thanks,
Kostas

Hi,

Do you want SyncBack to automatically delete older files from your backup drive based on their age or size? If so, there is not inherent option/setting in SyncBack to delete older backups (its only possible to set a retention period for version files, but not for live backup files).

However, you can create a new 'Housekeeping' profile in SyncBack to delete older files/folders from your destination based on their last modification (or creation) date/time stamps. Then run that housekeeping profile as part of a Group which includes your main profile. Please read this forum post for more details on creating and configuring a housekeeping profile:

Thank you.

SyncBack V8 BETA • Will these OneDrive issues be fixed in V8?

$

As I undestand the upcoming V8 release will be able to handle ";" and "%" characters in file/folder names backuped to OneDrive (GREAT!)
But what about folders starting with a dot (e.g. ".svn"), will they also be allowed?

And will the frequent "HTTP/1.1 416 Requested Range Not Satisfiable" errors also be fixed?
(It can happen on any file, either once in a while or almost every time, and even if the file is small and only have standard characters in the name).

Here's a short log excerpt from my latest SyncBackPro v7.6.74.0 backup to OneDrive Private, which illustrates the problem:

SyncBack V8 BETA • Re: Will these OneDrive issues be fixed in V8?

$

Hi,

SyncBackPro V8 is using the latest Onedrive API which gives more freedom in folder/filename naming. So folder names starting with a period are allowed but the percentage sign (%) is not allowed on Onedrive Business (but allowed on Onedrive Personal). More on this you can read here -> https://dev.onedrive.com/misc/path-enco ... characters

As for the range errors, those are errors thrown at random to various users so we can just hope that the new API has sorted these out.

You can test the V8 beta if you like and see how it works for you. Instructions can be found here -> viewtopic.php?t=12742#p48412

I upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary Edition (10.14393) in March but have only recently realised my daily backups have been failing (it would have been nice if SyncbackSE had told me!!!).

The stated fix is to install the latest version of Syncback V7

however, I am using SyncbackSE V6.5.49.0 (upgrading to V7 is too expensive.

How do I get hold of the fix for version 6?

Hi,
for understanding what the [Subject]_suggestion is in aid of, allow me shortly decribe my SBP usage environment: My families correspondence, pictures, document scans, appointments, notices, dates ... (hole life) is stored to a 64 GB TrueCrypt encrypted USB flash drive. All computers I'm used to use subsequently have a SBP profile to backup this flash drive via web and VPN to a Linux SMB file server (the remote site is not encrypted). The normal procedure when backing up is, waiting 5 minutes to scan the remote site and another 5 seconds to replace the touched files. In order to shorten this procedure
the [Subject] is a plain ASCII file that
- resides remotely
- holds all the information SBP needs to perform
- is remotely updated by a simple shell scipt ...
- ... maybe as a cron job
- if exists tells SBP to skip scanning the file structure
- has a headline "#p;t;s...." telling that each line holds a file's "path/name/ext;timestamp of last access;size..."
In case this is already realized, I apologize to not dove as deep into SBP's feature list .

Ideas and general discussion • Re: Backup site pre scan csv file commitment

Hi,

There is an option in SyncBackPro to improve scan times of a Backup or Mirror profile types, which you can enable under:

Modify > Expert > Fast Backup > Perform a fast backup

When Fast Backup mode is enabled, SyncBackPro builds a database of your Source (during the first run with Fast Backup option enabled) as it is at the time, which should match what it backs up to the Destination. Hence it can, on the next run scans that source-now against Fast Backup database to work out the differences, and only backs up new/changed files from Source to Destination. Thus, Fast Backup mode will significantly reduce the scan time and overall backup time of a profile, especially when your destination is a network drive, FTP etc., However, SyncBackPro need to scan the Source drive in each run and compare it with the Fast Backup database to detect differences, there is no way to skip source scanning.

The first run of the profile with Fast Backup enabled (or a Rescan backups) will take the same amount of time as without Fast Backup enabled. This is because the Source against Destination will be scanned to identify the file differences on both sides. However, for the second and subsequent runs (or in a non-rescan backups) the scan time will be much faster as SyncBack will not need to scan the destination directory, because it remembers what it did the last time the profile was run.

Please read these KB articles for more details on Fast Backup:

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... st-backups

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... file-types

If you haven't enabled Fast Backup mode in your profile configuration then please try it to see if it helps?

Thank you.
