SyncBackPro (commercial) • Using SBP to archive daily to monthly, quarterly and yearly

$

I'm sure someone must have done this and I think it's easier and better managed in SBP than using scheduled tasks:
I backup some database files (about 10) each night and at the moment am keeping them "forever" on the destination server which is starting to take too much space.
I can easily delete any files more than 7 days old which almost does what I want - I would still have the 7 copies - but it's possible I might have an issue that I don't spot in 7 days, so, really, what I want to do is also keep one of those for a month, one for a quarter and one for a year.
Now ideally that yearly file would be exactly a year old but for that to happen I realize I would need to keep every daily copy for a year so there needs to be some compromise.
I want to keep as few copies as possible so I'm thinking a system of "buckets"
Every 7 days move a copy into a monthly bucket.
Every month move a copy from the monthly bucket to the quarterly bucket
Every quarter move a copy from the quarterly bucket to the yearly bucket.
Doing it this way I have fewer copies stored but my yearly backup is also always between 9 and 12 months old - which is good enough.
Does this make sense and has anyone found an efficient solution to this ?
Thanks,
David

SyncBackFree (freeware) • SBF don't see subfolder in a folder "Onedrive"

$

Hi, I am under Windows 10 1709 (64 bits) and SyncbackFree V.8.5.27.0 (32 bits)
I am trying to create a new profile to mirroring a subfolder of my local Onedrive folder to another folder on my computer :
Source : E:\Onedrive\Documents\Ada
Target : E:\Backup\Ada

to make manually a backup of this folder.

But the problem is SBF do not see the folders under E:\Onedrive\Documents\Ada but only the files (in the windows "select files and folders).
So, SBF copy only the few files witch are in E:\Onedrive\Documents\Ada and not the subfolders.

Why ?

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Issue with fast backup

$

Hi, I have been looking for a way to move files from source to destination without scanning the destination. I have asked this question in the past and the answer was to turn on Fast Backup. While trying to enable fast backup I get the error "Fast backup is not available because files or folders may be copied to, deleted from or moved to source." I have a very basic setup where I move files from a constant source to a constant destination. It is a one way only move.

I don't know what else to do, but If this is not currently possible I would like to see if the option could be added in a later release, where the software looks at the source files only and only checks to see if those files exist on destination, if not move them.

If you think about it you would only need the one file list and just use that list to see if exist on destination.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I tried the search function, but quoted strings are not supported in the search options, and all of my search terms were considered to simple.

Thanks

Hi, are you expecting the folders (the partial sub-path) ...\Onedrive\Documents\... to be created on (as part of) your Destination path? That won't happen automatically, but you could specify it manually if you wanted to, thus you could change your config to

Source : E:\Onedrive\Documents\Ada\
Target : E:\Backup\Onedrive\Documents\Ada\

and if you did, SB would create the \OneDrive\ folder and the \Documents\ folder on (in) the Destination for you. Such interim folders will be empty except for one entry, i.e. the next subfolder/path-component (it won't copy any other contents of \OneDrive\ folder- only the \Documents\ folder-entry - and so on...)

But it doesn't happen automatically because some users may not want all/most of the Source path to be re-created (or 'incorporated') in the path on the Destination device/resource. There is more background here, including an example (re flash/USB drives) why you might not want to have to navigate a mainly-empty path to get to your data.

Just a suggestion, please get a version working for MyCloud Devices. This could be a great way to introduce thousands of new users to your software.

This is the current linux version being used. The newer models have quadcore processors and 2 gb of ram. Linux version 4.1.13 (kman@kmachine) (gcc version 4.8.2 (crosstool-NG -20140427.163636 - Build-wd-00.01c) ) #1 SMP Fri Aug 5 11:21:08 CST 20it3f24b4d

I have also been longing for such a feature, but realize it would be difficult to implement since there is no way to know when Windows actually deleted a certain file (I guess the Recycle Bin folder could be examined, but there is no guarantee a deleted file would be found there).

However, an easy way for the developers to implement such a feature (or at least something similar) would be an option to
"Delete file from target X days after SyncBack first detected that it was deleted from source".
That way you would at least get a minimum amount of days until the file is actually deleted, depending on how often you run SyncBack...

SyncBackLite (commercial) • Detect file renames - Doesn't really work

$

I love your software and the main reason I upgraded was the feature "Detect file renames/move" shown in the comparison https://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/compare.html but to be honest I'm a little disappointed.

Let's say on the left side you rename a folder with over 10.000 files. The free version deletes all of them on the right side, creates a new folder and reuploads everything, which takes a lot of time only because one folders name changed. Yes, I could rename the folder manually on the right side but when I do my monthly backups I don't remember every folder that has been moved or renamed.

The upgraded versions promise to detect renames so I tried it out - the whole process took 5 times as long as deleting and uploading everything again.

Is that normal?
Are there any other possibilities that I didn't notice yet?

Newbies 2nd post

My wife has spent the last few weeks deleting many unwanted images from her laptop. (She's slowly running out of disk space :? )

If she no longer requires them to be kept on her Syncback free backup external hard drive, can I simply update the profile from "backup" to "mirror".

Thanks guys.............ebt

Should work. Why not change the profile type to Mirror (or, Copy the existing profile to a new one, then set that new one as a Mirror) and perform a Simulated Run to check for yourself.

it depends what the reason is for the profile finding files that look as though they need replacing. The most common reason is that the FTP server does (did) not store the LastModified date/time correctly (it may be wrong/corrupt/blank, or seconds-value is missing, or files are stamped 'as of' date/time of upload instead). You need to run the profile again (a Simulated Run will do) and check the Differences window for 'what difference' it is displaying re files you think should match, and report back. If the dates look identical on each side, check the Size values, and/or folder/filenames (especially any non-standard characters); something about the files is being reported as different, or the files SB proposes to copy would not be listed as 'Differences'...you can highlight a row in the grid and all the properties of that file (or pair of) will display in the properties pane lower left of the grid for easy cross-reference by eye.

It depends what the differences are how you might try to work around this (note: if the LastMod stamps are different, specify exactly 'how' or provide a screenshot - it might mean there is a simple solution)

Depending on the answer to the above, it might be possible to sidestep the problem using hashing, but only if the FTP server supports that (many do not, especially often the broken ones that cannot store the date/time properly). Go to the main FTP settings page of the profile and click the 'Test FTP Settings' button. The output text from the test should contain a section near the end labelled

Code:

DD/MM/YYYY HH:MM:SS: Features supported by FTP server:

and a line in the output (a few lines below it) like

DD/MM/YYYY HH:MM:SS: XCRC: Yes/No

If it says 'No' (or XCRC isn't listed at all) then the FTP server does not support hashing.

There are also some textual statements at the end of the test output about things the profile has figured out for itself, such as being able to store LastModified correctly (or not); it may be useful to post most of this test output here, but you should redact the IP address of the server (and any URL quoted) and the USER name before submitting (note that the password is [hidden] already).

Hi,

If the option ‘Detect file renames on Left/Right’ is enabled, SyncBack will try to detect 'file' renames (or moves) but not 'folder' renames.

If a file is renamed on one side SyncBack detects it and rename the same file on the opposite side. To detect file renames SyncBack has to calculate and compare the hash value of files on both sides to ensure their contents are identical before renaming them to match the opposite side. Therefore, the file rename detection process can be slow or take longer time if there are many files or very large files to compare. Please read the help file > Decision-Files settings page of Intelligent Synchronization profile for additional details.

Thank you.

Hi,

The option ‘Limit bandwidth usage to’ (under Copy/Delete > Advanced settings page) is supported only with internal, external or network drives, hence that option is grayed out as you are trying to backup to/from a Touch device.

Thank you.
