SyncBackPro (commercial) • Re: Copy All Files Into Single Folder?

Addendum: in case it's relevant, what I'm attempting to do is use SyncBack to copy some preselected documents onto a phone (over MTP), which may come from different places on my source system. While I know SyncBack wouldn't be able to scan the destination for matching purposes, that could be overcome by enabling FastBackup, so SyncBack will remember what it's already copied.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Archive attribute changed on source

Hi, I have just installed and started using your excellent SyncBackFree to backup my old PC's data to my new laptop via the local network.
I already do (or rather DID) backups on my old PC but I wanted to backup to my laptop so that I would have access to all my old files, even if I updated them on the old PC. And it sems to work really well and fast.

However I was very surprised when I realised that this had changed the archive attributes on the SOURCE computer without as much as a warning. Where is the sense of changing anything on the source of a backup? I have a batch file on the "source" computer that checks the archive bit and backsup any files that have been changed to DVD once a week. Much to my surprise today it started copying every single file in My Documenst to DVD. I stopped it and realised that SyncBackFree has changed the Archive bit on every single file it backed up to A - ready for archive.

IS THERE ANY WAY TO STOP / AVOID THIS?

I had a look at the "Copy/Delete -> Advanced -> Reset the archive file attribute on files once they have been copied" but that does not really help me. I need a "do not change archive attribute on source" option. I can see that you may be using the Archive Attribute for your backups, but please make that clearer. I assumed you used a databse or the files date/time for this. And I still cannot believe that you CHANGE anything on the remote computer source file store, during a backup?

Would it be possible to set Windows to only allow Read Only for the source computer on the network?
That would not allow your software to change the attibute.

Unless I find a way round this I must admit that I will have to stop using this software and go back to SyncToy.

WELL...... now i'm really confused.

I re-run the backup just now, having changed a few files on the source and turned off some archive attributes, and SyncBackFree did NOT change any archive attributes on the source PC.

I have been running my archive batch file for ..... YEARS and this is the first time I've had this problem.
Unfortunatelly as I had just tried out SyncBackFree I jumped to the conclusion that it had caused the issue.

SORRY

Does anyone have any ideas what could have caused all my files to suddenly have their archive attributes to be marked as ready to archive?

I must admit that SyncBackFree is so much easier to use than SyncToy, being able to select or unselect individual folders and files is brilliant.
It's also so much faster than SyncToy which really seems to slow down when you have loads of files. I had been forced to split my backup into smaller chunks untill I tried SyncBackFree. Not for me, I prefer to backup manually, but I've shown this great utility to other people who also love how easy it is to schedule backups.

Hi,

Are you backing-up files to/from a local OneDrive folder on Windows 10? If yes, you need to un-tick the option "Ignore NTFS junction points (reparse points)" from:

Modify profile > Expert > Compare Options > Attribute settings page

This is due to the new OneDrive changes in Windows 10 fall creators update. More details here:

Thank you.

I'd also like to request that AllDrives (source) be capable of copying to other destination types (i.e. AllDrives to MTP, so I can backup files that happen to reside on multiple partitions to my phone).

Ideas and general discussion • P2P syncs

$

I have already purchased licenses for SyncBack SE and Pro, and have been using for years. Really is the best-of-breed sync tool for Windows - keep up the great work.
One feature I found myself wanting that prompted consideration of purchasing from a competitor is easy P2P sync.
Software like SyncThing (free) and GoodSync (expensive) both allow users to sync to peers either over LAN and WAN networks by simply matching an identifier key from the peers. So the companies must have set up something on their servers to point these peers to the proper IPs.
It very much simplifies the process for the consumer who isn't capable of configuring dynamic DNS and its updater, and figuring out routing and port forwarding (or just doesn't have the time). The software above finds the easiest path (e.g. LAN only if on same LAN) and also encrypts the packets before sending over the network.
This is something CrashPlan used to do for people as well.

Anyway, might make a nice feature for the consumer set -- and might open up possibilities for remote syncing and from mobile devices.

Apart from making multiple profiles, is there any way of backing up one source to many destinations?

Heya,
3 years later and I'm still looking for a convenient solution for this.
Did Syncback by chance did get an API in the meantime so one can query the source/destination file list and run (before/after) programs on all and/or a selection of files ?
Or automate an internal, pre-sync 'Export All...' to then do the file-parsing on...?

Cheers.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • If I move files into different folders, is SyncBack Pro able to see the files have just been moved? Or will it re-upload

Hi there,

So I have mirrored backups going to local drives as well as offsite to Google Drive, everything is working as it should but I am conscious that at some stage I may need to rearrange the folder structure on the source drive (The actual files within will not change)

Will SyncBack Pro recognise that these files are still present just in different folders and move them accordingly? Or will it delete the files on the destination and start transferring them from the source again?

I may have several terabytes of content that needs to be reorganised in this fashion, so this could prove to be a big issue for me.

Cheers

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Google Drive backup profile results in Unknown error

I have a job which is set to create a single ZIP backup file on Google Drive. I actually have several of these, and almost all of them work fine.

However, one of them chugs along for a while, everything looks successful, but errors out every time. It gives a message dialog that says "Unknown Error". I was only able to see this dialog by changing the settings to prompt me on several things, such as source or destination not available. Otherwise it fails, it gives a log that says that it failed, but nothing in the log says why. It just say Result: Failure.

Since this is a zip file, which is all-or-nothing, no file is created in the destination.

Any help would be appreciated. I am running the latest version, V8.5.43.0 (x32).

Thanks!

Ralph

Hi,

Only an Intelligent Sync profile supports file move/rename detection using the options “Detect file renames on left/right". This feature is not available in Backup or Mirror profile types.

Please refer to this forum post for additional details:

SyncBackPro (commercial) • SyncBackPro - Zip encrypted filenames issue

$

I have a profile to mirror source to a ZIP file. The ZIP is encrypted. All works fine and the resultant ZIP is able to be opened with all the regular ZIP tools (7zip etc). However, if I enable "Encrypt and compress the filenames and details" the resultant ZIP file is not able to be processed with any tool I have used. I have tried 7zip, WinRAR and WinZIp. All latest versions. They all produce errors and cannot process the file. Is there something I'm missing in this regard?

Relevant settings:

Compression
- Compress the files on Destination into a Zip file
- Put all files into a single compressed file
- Type of compression - Deflated - Standard compression algorithm
- Level of compression - 7 - High compression

- Encryption
- Encryption method - WinZip 9 compatible AES encryption (256 bits)
- Encrypt and compress the filenames and details [checked]

HI, it seems that the name-encryption facility in SB is based on PKware's SecureZip - see the contextual Help on the Compression > Encryption settings page (my underlining)

Encrypt and compress the filenames and details: SyncBack can optionally encrypt and compress the filenames and file details in the Zip file. By doing this, anyone who opens the Zip file (to see the file list) will be unable to see anything without knowing the password. This encryption method is compatible with PKWare SecureZip. It is not compatible with the same feature in WinZip and 7-Zip.To use this option some other options must be set first: all files must be put into a single Zip file, the Deflated or BZip2 compression method must be used, the encryption method must be AES, split or spanned Zip files cannot be used, self-extracting Zip files cannot be used and the compression level must be greater than zero (i.e. it must be compressed).

From memory (during the V8 beta stages) I tried SecureZip's free reader, which worked fine to decrypt (extract) the files but doesn't support displaying the filenames stored inside the Zip. Ipso facto, you would need to extract all of them at once with the free SZ reader because there is no way in the reader to select a specific file or files. IIRC you need the full version of SecureZip (approx $40 last time I checked) if you need a standalone solution. Or, you can of course use SB SE/Pro in Restore mode.

Note: this was the extent of my testing - it's not something I use in my own system, so I probably cannot assist you further than the Help file can.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Estimated time left for cloud backups??

$

Just upgraded from v7 to v8 so I could use B2 as a backup destination, and am a bit surprised to see "Estimated time left: unknown" when the profile I'm running gets to the upload phase!

Syncback obviously knows how much data it has to transfer, and since it's giving me stats on the amount of data uploaded and a current transfer rate, I'm not sure why there is not an actual estimate of the time remaining as it should be simple to calculate from the available information...

Would this be possible to add in a future version? Obviously it's only going to be an estimate, but when I'm uploading a lot of data on a relatively slow home broadband connection it's nice to know roughly how many hours/days it's going to take to complete!
