Mirroring vs Back-Up

I purchased SyncBackSE in order to back-up my files on my computer. I am using it to back-up files from my main hard drive to an external hard drive.

This is what I find a bit confusing and contradictory. It appears by using the back-up function, the program backs up everything I tell it to from my main hard drive to my external hard drive, but if I choose "mirror" it does the same thing.

It seems though that by choosing back-up, it copies new files onto the external hard drive but also keeps files that I have deleted or moved from the main hard drive (and no longer need or want) on my external hard drive.

For instance, I download a lot of music. When I do, I put new music I have downloaded into a file called "not backed up," which once full I back-up on DVD/CD (for extra precaution) and then after that I move it to my library and sort it into its proper folders (jazz, rock, dance, etc.).

So when I run SyncBackSE it keeps the files I had in the "not backed up" folder while also copying same files that I have put in their new locations, which is rather redundant and a waste of space.

Now, common sense tells me to use the "mirror" function but the help & instructions say otherwise, so should I go with my instincts on this or am I missing something?
