Problem solved!!
I noticed that my laptop (wired) worked well with Windows 8 and the Synology.
The driver of the NIC (Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet) proved to be the culprit.
Windows 8 (automatically) installed a version (2.4.7.292) that is problematic.
I downloaded a version for WinXP/Vista (2.4.7.15) and all is well now.
