Re: Simple email Notification on Group Profile Start/Stop ?

FrankBKK wrote:Unfortunately if a sub profile is part of a group profile it seems that any changes on a single sub profile will automatically change the settings of the other profiles

I believe this is because you are using a single Shared Setting in your Email Log settings page for all your member profiles within the Group, correct? (which may explain why changing the settings here would affect the rest).

Back to your question. What you can do is to create 2 'dumb' profiles. Name them whatever you want - eg, Before and After.

Point your Source and Destination paths within these profiles to whatever folders you want. Then under

Modify > Expert > Decisions-Files

and

Decisions-Files > Folders

settings page on each of them, configure EVERY action to "Do nothing, skip the file" and "Do nothing" respectively.

The purpose of these two dumb profiles is to simply run them without actually copying/changing anything in order to send a copy of the email log to your mailbox (before and after).

Next, under

Modify > Expert > Log > Email Log

Do not use back that same email log's Shared Setting profile you have used for the rest of your actual profiles. Instead, configure your Log settings and then click on New button so that these email settings are stored as a new Shared Setting profile that is only used for this "before/after" purpose.

You might also want to configure under

Modify > Expert > Log > Advanced

so that an email log is sent to your designated mailbox after every run, instead of only when an error occurs (ie, don't enable this option).

Also, you might want to consider enabling "Do not attach the log file, just send the email body" since this is just a 'dumb' profile that doesn't do anything. But I'll leave this decision to you.

Note - if you prefer to have your subject title in your received email read as something like for example - "Start of run" and "End of run". In other words, a different subject title for "Before/After", you would need to create at least two new Shared Settings so that their subject title can be changed independently of each other.

Finally, include these two 'dumb' profiles into the Group and move the "starter" to the beginning of the run order while the "ender" to be the last profile to run.

Hey, thanks Conrad. I fully understand that this is an issue with the Mac server - thanks for your suggestions. My reason for trying the free version was to test this sort of thing before buying.

Thank you for your detailed response, Conrad.

Conrad Chung wrote:Is the option "On Change" enabled under

Modify > Expert > When > Changes?

Yes, it indeed is.

On Change will work independently from On Insert, so it will trigger the profile whenever the Source files have changed and will try to scan the SD card as specified in your Destination. When the path as stated in your Dest is not present, it would then result in "Scan Failure".

Now I understand. I was hoping both function would work in an AND relation so that the profile is only started when both triggers are fulfilled.

Bear in mind that the function of On Insert does not mean "the profile will only run if this card is present, which is not the case. It's a trigger event, not a pre-condition.

I get it now ;-) You are correct, I was assuming that the presence of the card would be enough not the action of inserting.

Your profile is most probably being triggered by changes you've made to files on Source and not actually the On Insert of the 'other' card that is triggering it.

Agreed!

In conclusion, you may need to decide which setting you want:

1) to trigger on Insert and catch up with any outstanding edits/changes, or
2) to trigger on Change (in which case you need to have the correct card inserted and present all the time whenever edits to your Source files are expected). It won’t actually hurt anything (except record an error) as it is, but it's not possible to set a condition to make the change-detection trigger only upon the correct SD card being inserted since it doesn't care about this aspect.

This answers the question I would have now asked: if it is possible to set a profile to only run when a certain sd card is already inserted in the laptop. I just want to prevent my backup profile to start when I have another sd card (e.g. from a camera) inserted and copy files onto that card. I guess the correct folder settings helps to prevent this.

Another alternative would be to leave On Change as it is, and enable the option "Silently Fail if [Side] cannot be reached..." under

Modify > Expert > Copy/Delete > Advanced

I will try that.

Thank you again for this help!

Retrying Failed Files on FTP Sync

I been using SyncBackPro for several years now to sync files on my work and home computers a couple of times a day via FTP. It is set up so that it runs automatically and it has been working with very few problems. However, this summer I've started to get multiple errors like the following each time I run the sync:

Scan failed (-1): Expected another server reply(15) : 550 Data channel timed out.

The files it fails on changes over time and it has been causing a lot of problems with the sync. Depending on what file/folder it fails on, it causes conflicts to arise, files to be deleted when they shouldn't be, etc.
Now, I realize that this is probably a problem with the server at work and I've asked about it. I also realize that I'm not likely to get them to seriously look into it.
My question here is whether there are some settings I can tweak to have it retry the scan on those files if that occurs. I've played around with the FTP settings and I haven't had any luck so far.

Thanks for the help.

I am talking about me, myself, through windows explorer, or command prompt, adding/deleting/renaming files in Source.

I was under the impression that Fast Backup couldn't handle deleting, or renaming. I'll try, I guess.

Ah, got it. Fast backup still scans my Source, just doesn't scan destination.

Is there a way for SBSE to not scan anything at all during a "super fast" profile run, i.e., any changes to files that I make cause those files to immediately get flagged for later processing by SBSE? Just files that were touched- no scanning needed then.

No, that's not possible. The Source is always scanned (so that it know what files have changed/added/deleted, etc) and it has something to compare against.

To not scan both Source and Destination would probably require some form of live monitoring agent that is on all the time in order to keep track of your Source/Destination so that it knows whenever a file has been altered. But we do not have such function in SyncBack. And I reckon it will probably take up quite a bit RAM to do so.

BTW, your copy of SyncBackSE is very out-of-date (V5.9.2.8 ) so some of the functions we discussed here may not be available to you. Do note that the latest version is V7.0.14.0.

you're welcome!

BTW, it might also be useful to include the variable %GROUPNAME% into your dummy profiles' email Subjects, so that you know which Group it is meant for.

Hi, you're welcome. BTW, that error message is actually coming from SyncBack, as contrary to what I wrote (I stand corrected). Basically it's complaining/reporting about the corrupt/garbage output (empty filenames, etc) being sent back by the Mac due to the SMB bug.

Just to clarify this for you and the benefit of other users.

Hi, this is probably caused by the firewall configuration on the FTP servers computer, e.g.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Fo ... l-problems

If you're using the IIS FTP server this should help:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/vijaysk/archive ... s-5-0.aspx

Basically, with a passive connection you need to make sure the port range the FTP server is configured to use for passive connections is also open on the firewall. The reason it's random is that the port number will keep changing for each upload and download (and directory listing), so eventually you'll hit one that's not open.

Re: Few WANTED features for SB

Personally, I have the backups covered by doing backup of the profiles themselves to backup media as well as the %WEEKDAY% variable in the backup destination making several backups per week. Myself, I would want the CLEANUP checkbox more than any "protection" that NOT cleaning the backup directory affords.

I've updated my OS, PC and reimaged too many times since I started using SB years ago, and had to reinstall SB and been caught by this a few times. I restore the profiles - and restore all the other profiles that I had deleted weeks, months even a year or better before. I have quite a nested "mess" of profiles that I change and update regularly.

I would say offer the CLEANUP function and make a stern popup that using it will delete all the backup folder profile backups - much the same type of warning that the file and folder deletion profile options do in SB itself when chosen when defining a sync profile.

Stop Blank Window

Can I stop the blank window from appearing after I try to run a profile that tells me there is nothing to back up? I've got a group with 14 profiles and this window can popup 14 times. It kind of negates the usefulness of running multiple profiles at once

NAS backup to HDD after reinitialization

Hi All,
I am mirroring my NAS to a HDD using SyncBackSE and had no issues. I rebuilt the NAS RAID and copied the backup from the HDD to the NAS using FileZilla. Same folder names, etc. For a test I then ran the SyncBack profie. It compared the newly FTP copied files on the NAS to the backup HDD and wants to replace all the files in the backup. I believe attributes may be part of the issue. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I had to cancel the first backup of my Nexus 7 because, after an hour, I had over 18,000 errors similar to:

Scan failed (-1): Scan failed on [/acct/uid/10000/] with error code 13

or

Scan failed (-1): Scan failed on/proc/12153/task/12220/cwd/proc/12153/task/12220/cwd/proc/12153/task/12159/fd/] with error code 13

The backup was to a new folder on my PC running Win 8.1 64 bit

Some help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,

Can you tell us which version are you running and if the issue appears when you actually run the profile or when you are simulating a run?

Also, are you referring to the differences screen?

Thanks,

As stated on the Expert Mode: Copy/Delete > Versioning section of the SyncBackPro Help file,

A version of a file is automatically created when:

· A file is to be replaced (a copy of the file to be replaced is made before it is replaced)

· A file is to be deleted (a copy of the file to be deleted is made before it is deleted)

· A file is to be moved (a copy of the file to be moved is made before it is moved, which is essentially the same as being deleted)

Below are examples on how it works (with Versioning enabled):

· You choose to delete a file. SyncBack makes a version of the file and then deletes the file. At a later time you may decide that you actually wanted to keep that file. If so you can run the profile and retrieve the version and so restore the file.

· You make some modifications to a document then make a backup of it. SyncBack will make a version of the backup file that is about to be replaced then make the backup. At a later time you may decide that you did not want those changes. If so you can run the profile and retrieve the version and so restore the file to before the changes were made.

Have you tried altering any existing Source file (that you know has already been copied to Destination) and add/remove contents inside the file, then try running the profile again?
