SyncBackFree (freeware) • Using SyncBack as a synchronization tool

$

Using SyncBack as a backup tool is straightforward and works as expected.

I tried using it as a synchronization tool, and it didn't seem to work too well. I'm thinking it's simply not designed to do that job, but I wanted to post here to double-check that I'm not just missing something.

By "synchronization", I mean intelligently keeping two folders the same. The trouble, of course, is when you delete a file out of one of the folders. Because SyncBack can't read your mind, when it is run to perform a sync, it doesn't know that you deleted a file on purpose, and so it copies the file back to the folder where it was deleted (or asks the user to make that determination). It simply sees a file in one folder and doesn't see it in the other folder.

From what I can tell, SyncBack isn't really designed to perform this type of synchronization. And that's okay! No sense in trying to shove a square bolt into a round hole. SyncBack does a great job doing what it is designed to do! But I just wanted to make sure its not that I'm simply unaware of some functionality that allows SyncBack to be used for this type of synchronization.

As per

Help -> Quick Start -> Understanding Backup & Synchronization -> Synchronize (Smart Sync) & Synchronize (Basic)

SyncBackFree can only do the latter. You would need one of the commercial (SE or Pro) versions to get full ('Smart') sync capability

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=929

Note that if you adhere to the default installation folders, you can install all three products at once. SE does not physically upgrade Free, and Pro does not physically upgrade SE or Free. They are separate products, that must be installed in separate folders, and each have progressively more features. There is an auto-import feature for lower-spec profiles to higher-spec products, but you should note that a basic Sync profile will stay that way after import to SE or Pro, and would need to be changed via Modify profile -> Easy mode (the default) -> Type -> Synchronise Left With Right. You cannot reconfigure a basic Sync to Smart Sync simply by editing the basic Decisions-Files settings, as it requires switching to an enhanced Decisions-Files settings page with many more options.

Or, make a new profile 'from scratch' and select 'Synchronize (Smart Sync)' from the 'type of profile' screen

During a Restore run of a profile, the Differences window will appear (after you have answered a series of questions). You can mass-select or cherry-pick the files you want to Restore (or un-select from the Restore process) using a combination (or either/or) of Shift and/or Ctrl keys + right-mouse clicks to either Skip files you do not want to Restore, or include them in the Restore process (by selecting to copy such files from one side to the other).

By the way, it's not clear from your post whether you are asking for assistance on how to Restore Versioned files from a particular sub-folder or just Restoring non-Versioned, backed up files from that folder. Thus I have only provided general Restore advice. If that does not answer your question, please elaborate here.

Hi all. Great software. Been using it on a windows box for a while with no hiccups. Actually if I can get it to do what I need I am going to install it on a virtual box under my linux simply to automate a project.

I need to know when a directory has finished being transfered. I will explain

I have a box remote to my location. It has a root diretory called lets say
/rootdir/ that I access via ftp
Under this dir my box creates sub directories.
/rootdir/sub1
/rootdir/sub2
/rootdir/sub3
etc

I need to mirror these back localay via FTP and know when they are mirrored. What I mean is on my local machine SBP creates the directories under a root local dir but I need a way of knowing when each directory is finished even if the transfer is interupted and resumes 6 times. The remote box doesnt update the directories once they are created and filled. It happens only once. So I am after a way of copying them to a local machine and either creating say an extra file in the directory to indicate its copied or running an external program or say having a lock file in that directory untill its finished. I then need to process the file localy but ONLY after they all are here hence my issues. If I run the processing script before the directory is finished, it fouls up my data

Any ideas?
regards, P

if you don't already know... ms has now (new) page with onedrive api docs:

http://onedrive.github.io/index.htm

they even write about the 500 error i get then uploading my 8 gb file...

Resume or retry uploads that fail due to connection interruptions or any 5xx errors, including:
500 Internal Server Error
502 Bad Gateway
503 Service Unavailable
504 Gateway Timeout
Use an exponential back off strategy if any 5xx server errors are returned when resuming or retrying upload requests.

Great to see SugarSync support coming. I'm evaluating the 7.3.0.3 PRO beta. The SugarSync backup seems to be working, but it's pretty slow (perhaps that's due to a slow USB port; there are a bunch of possible causes).

Any idea when this feature might come out of beta, and whether there are likely to be speed improvements in the release version (as you've mentioned in the context of Amazon cloud support)?

Thanks.

When a file is deleted from the My Documents folder does it remain in the backup folder. If it does, is there a way to force deletion of the backup file when the original is deleted?

Thanks T.

You haven't stated which Profile Type you are using? Backup, Mirror, SmartSync, etc.

You haven't stated which version of SE you are using either?

The latter two, by default, would auto delete files. (For Mirror profiles, it's one-sided delete, meaning files on Source are deleted, the same file on Destination would be deleted as well. For SmartSync, it's a 2-way sync)

For a Backup profile then it would not delete files on the Destination (by default).

I would normally suggest to first check what your profile Type (under Modify > Easy > Type), but since this applies to V7 only, it's not clear whether it applies to you or not as I do not know your the SE version you are using.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • SB Profile hanging with high CPU not doing anything, with large files from FTP server

$

Hello, I'm running SyncBack Pro v7.0.32.0. I have about 25 profiles setup, and all of them are running good except for one of them. They all connect to the same SFTP server and copy files to the local disk (a 1 way sync). The only difference between the profiles is they are copying different folders from the same SFTP server.

The one notable difference with the profile I'm having problems with is it is copying much larger ZIPs, each ZIP around 45 - 55 GBs. Typically it's only 1 ZIP it needs to copy, sometimes 2. When the profile does successfully complete, I do see "reconnection" warnings. An example: "23 reconnections where made to the FTP server. Check your network, router, firewall, and FTP server settings." Sometimes it's up to 50+ reconnections reported, but has completed in the past even with these reconnections (I would like to improve/reduce the reconnections if possible).

This profile has been hanging about half the time since I setup this server 2 weeks ago. It will create the temporary file on disk (SBSE____.xxx) and after so much data has downloaded (e.g. 50 or 500 MBs etc), the size of the file is no longer increasing. The CPU of that SyncBackPro.exe is up in the 90%+ causing the overall server CPU to reach 100%. It will last like this for days, seemingly doing nothing. Trying to stop the Profile from the SyncBack UI doesn't work, and I end up killing the process in Task Manager. Before the last run, I found the "Time Limit" setting in SyncBack and set it to 6 hours. However, it continues to run well past 6 hours (the current run is 1.5 days). Here's a screenshot of SyncBack reporting the profile has reached the Time Limit, yet it continues to run (the run time is even cut off in the UI). The temp SBSE___.xxx file I cannot delete until after I've killed the SyncBack process.

I want to fix this. I suppose fixing the reconnection issue would be a top priority, but I'm not sure how to improve that. It's set for SFTP (port 22). It's a shared FTP profile with the other SyncBack profiles, and seems to not have reconnection issues on those profiles, but probably because it's downloading much smaller files. I have the proxy and firewall settings left empty at their defaults. The other FTP settings are at their defaults.

Any suggestions are appreciated - many thanks.
Ben

Hi, sometimes SFTP servers may timeout the session during large-sized file transfers, because the SFTP may assume the connection has been broken during such transfers. When the connection is severed, SyncBack would attempt to reconnect for [X] number of times based on the configured setting under FTP > Advanced settings page, which is the reason why you kept seeing all the reconnection messages.

Check your SFTP server configuration to see if you have any configured settings to timeout a session to [X] minutes? If so, either remove that setting or extend the duration.

BSE____.XXX (where the XXX is random) are used in the process called SafeCopies in SyncBackSE/Pro. Files are copied to whichever side applies under that temp name, and only if the transfer is successful is the temp file renamed to the target file name, replacing it in the process. This process is on by default, under the section:

Modify > Expert > Copy/Delete > Advanced > 'Make safe copies...'

If Safe Copy is turned off, then Resuming will not work.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Sync Issue with Compression+Encryption

$

Hello!

First of all I want to thank 2BrightSparks for this great product. I use it long time without any problem.

The only problem I encountered recently when I tried sync with compress and crypt. I never used them before.

So I did several tests and they were passed. Except the following test. I compress and crypt a Source and sync it to Destination (empty before sync). By sync I mean mirror sync. Thеn I copy some files to Destination folders (not with SyncBack, I do it with Explorer of course). Then I do sync again. I expect SyncBack to delete this files as there's no those in the Source. But SyncBack doesn't see these files and doesn't do anything.

Is it possible to fix that? Maybe I should check/uncheck some boxes?

Thank you

SyncBackFree (freeware) • unable to sync bkf file type

Hi
I've set a sync process for a bkf file type (windows server backup file type) from one folder to another.
The sync is failing due to this error:
Failed to copy from D windows backup : The drive D: may be full or read-only
Since there is no problem in the free space in the drive and the file (or the folder) are not checked as read only I am not sure I understand why the sync is failing.
The only reason I see is that it is an encrypted file.

Is there a solution for that?

I am using SyncBackFree V7 on a windows server 2003.

Thanks
Yoav

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Re: Sync Issue with Compression+Encryption

Hi, 'sync' and 'mirror' (also, 'backup') are different concepts/terms in this software - as per Help -> Quick Start -> Understanding Backup and Synchronization -> the jumplinks at top of that section. Try not to combine the terms and/or use your own shorthand descriptions (which may not match other peoples'...) or you may confuse readers and reduce your chances of a reply. Try and stick to the terminology the program uses :)

It's also useful if you state the full version number of the software (x.x.x.x) and your version of Windows. The text below assumes you are using SyncBackFree V7.x.x.x.

I suspect this one can be easily explained if my guesswork is correct. If you select Compression (Encryption is not relevant in itself except that it requires Compression in the first place), SyncBack will generate files with the extension specified in

Modify -> Expert -> Compression -> Advanced -> Filename extension (usually '.zip', as Free only supports basic compression)

and the profile will from that point onwards ignore files on the side that uses Compression (i.e, that stores files compressed) that do not have this extension. I suspect the files you copied there manually via Explorer are 'standard' files (DOC, XLS, PDF, whatever)? If so, such a profile will take no notice of them, because it 'obviously' didn't create them while compressing/encapsulating a data file (they don't have the extension it is configured to use for the compressed end product). If it didn't, any any attempt to 'look inside' them for the properties of the actual data file inside (which is what a compression profile expects/does on 'that' side) would inevitably error (because they're not compressed archive files).

It's not a good idea to mix & match compressed & uncompressed files in the same location if you want to automate the processing thereof (including compression, extraction and 'scanning inside'), but this 'ignoring' of uncompressed files ('extension does not match') is an attempt to avoid problems if you do. You can't change the behavior of the program (but you can change yours...)

Hi,
I was about to ask this same question then I saw this post. In January I searched the forum and found some posts where people said they were syncing two PCs with SyncBackFree. Based on my tests, they have to do it with some restrictions; such as only performing updates on one PC or only performing updates to Documents on PC1 and only performing updates to Music on PC2. From the replies in this thread and what I've read in the tutorials, I'm planning to upgrade to SyncBackSE.

Do I have to get a license for SE on each PC that will be synced? I plan to sync specific folders on 2 laptops, and both PCs are only used at home; not business related. I probably missed something related to the number of PCs that SE or PRO can be installed on. Thanks.

Gary

Hi, we've just uploaded a new beta that we've tested and works for large files (well, it does for us but we know it can be hit and miss with large files and cloud services). However, this is using the old unofficial method. We're working on changing it to use the new API that was just released. Not sure when that will be released, but hopefully in the next couple of weeks:

Can someone explain what method of encryption is used in SyncBack free? It says "Old style ZIP encryption". Is it AES 256?

Thank you

It refers to the original encryption method that comes with the Zip format, which is compatible with most Windows OS, third party Zip programs, etc.

See the section under Encryption here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_%28file_format%29

AES encryption is an entirely different form of encryption, different from the current old-style Zip format discussed here. And only the commercial versions of SyncBackSE and SyncBackPro supports AES encryption.
