SyncBackFree (freeware) • SBF freezes when I try to create a New Profile

$

In v 8.5.5, when I try to create a New Profile, once that window opens, that's it: the program freezes. I can't enter any text Profile Name or close that window. To close the program, I have to use Task manager.

I have seven profiles already. Is there a limit on how many profile I can have using SyncBackFree?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Mickey

Hi, and sorry for my english

I'm trying Syncback pro and i try to make it work with cryptomator, that i use to crypt files on the cloud.

Cryptomator create a network drive like Z: if you want, related to my cloud storage: MEGA in my case, but it's the same with others
When i try to create a new profile in syncback and want to select this network drive as destination, it doesn't show up in the list, so i can't use it

I tried in administrator mode, same issue.

Do you know what i can do ?
Thanx for you help

Hi, see this KB article

The quickest solution is probably the registry tweak. IIRC no-one has reported any problems when trying it since Vista launched...

Hi, there's no limit to the number of profiles you can have in any version of SB (though if you have hundreds, it might be a little slow to load). As you've probably seen, there are no other recent reports on here of anything similar. I have a copy of SBF installed for testing purposes and can create a new profile OK despite having over 30 profiles already.

But I have no specific idea why you should get the lockup you describe, sorry. Have you tried a reboot? Has anything changed on your system (for example, a Windows Update) recently? You should also probably try a fresh install of SBF v8.5.5.0 (install over the top to preserve your settings and profiles).

Hi 2BrightSparks team,

I was thinking it would be really nice If i could login to a web interface or some sort of android application that would allow me to trigger a backup, check the logs or the likes.

I currently use the program for a nightly SFTP download to my server from a remote system. It would be nice If I could trigger that mirroring to occur manually once in a while or check remotely to make sure the mirroring occurred successfully.

Thanks for such a clean and easy to setup program!

SyncBackFree (freeware) • One month of work lost !

Yes, it did just happened ! I use SBF to save my work every evening on an external HD.
Unfortunatly, I had to relaod my win7 system from a system back-up dated one month ago.
When restarting my computer, SBF runned immediatly my profile back-up and then crashed the yesterday back-up with the contents of files dating one month ago and ... I have lost my work of the last month !
I had not the time to restore my yesterday back-up in my computer !
Probably I miss some options in the configuration of SBF :
First, why did SBF run immediatly a back-up when I had reloaded my system instead of waiting for the planned time ?
Second, how is it possible that SBF replaces recent files by old files ? I could not find any option about that in the SBF menu.

1) There is a setting in a Scheduled Task (the MS-default is Yes, but you can change it) to 'Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed'. You can find it on the Misc tab of SB's Schedule drill-down dialog (or on the Settings tab of the underlying Windows Scheduled Task). If this setting was in place when you took your 'system backup dated one month ago', then it will of course be reloaded/remain the case when you perform a system Restore, and because it appears from the Task's own History that it last ran a month ago, it will take effect after booting (quite possibly 'immediately/unexpectedly')

You should note that this MS-defined option calculates its decision from Windows Task Scheduler's own Task History, not from any info stored by SB (though your system restore likely replaced any SB historical data anyway). So, SB did not decide to run your profile, Windows decided to run SB > your profile (subtle difference)

2) You didn't give details about your profile settings, but I would guess the top section of its Modify > Expert mode > Decisions - Files is set as 'Source overwrites Destination always (backup)''? Given that Source is usually where new/changed-content first manifests itself (because Source is where you do your work and save the results), this normally works 'as expected'. Unless, that is, you just changed the Source content wholesale to 'as of one month ago', and had agreed that your PC would start running SB > that profile as soon as possible/able after your PC thinks a run was missed - in which case in every instance where a file exists on both sides, the (old) Source file will win. Any instances of newer files on your external drive (that did not exist a month ago, so do not now exist on your Source) may - if your profile is set up as a Mirror - also be deleted, as part of the normal housekeeping of a Mirror profile

It's a little late now, but for future reference, simply unplugging the external drive during the first boot and allowing the late-start Scheduled run to Fail (because 'Destination unreachable') would have solved it (provided your very next move is to Restore the latest copy of the data)

Or, you could consider arranging things so you have a system disk and a data disk (or, with slightly less security, a similar concept using partitions), in which case you should find that a system restore doesn't also move your data 'back in time' in the first place...

I am running 8.5.5.0 and this problem was with the previous version as well. I just start massive uploads to B2 that will take weeks to complete and noticed every few days the service just stops. Oddly not even an entry in the Windows event logs. When I click logs the only logs available are ones that were completed so I don't know why it is crashing. It is frustrating since I need to check it once or twice a day or will not catch it and will fall that much further behind in my 10TB uploads.

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Windows 10 Ransomware Protection Conflict

I have just upgraded to Windows 10 1709 the Fall creators update. This version includes a new facility in Windows Defender to set certain folders to be protected against ransomware. I have added Syncback.exe to the list of excluded applications but when I try and run a backup I get a failure with this error message

Ransomware Detection: The hash value of the file (D:\Tim's documents\O0507P4A.rtf) could not be calculated: Cannot open file "\\?\D:\Tim's documents\O0507P4A.rtf". The system cannot find the file specified

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Not backing up correctly.

So I thought I setup my profile correctly but apparently I didn't and I don't know where I went wrong and don't know what I need to change. I have an external drive connected to a computer that we use as a centralized hub for data storage. Obviously I want to make sure if anything happens to this computer the external will have all the files backed up so we don't lose everything but I just checked and it doesn't backup everything. For example, there is one folder on source that has 24 folders nested in it and it is clean and organized but when I check the destination (backup) There isn't 1 folder with 24 folders nested, there is 22 folders and random pdf's that aren't filed away. So its liked it backed up a few months ago and now it doesn't backup the organized folder and I assume this is the case with everything. I just need to set it up so every week it takes everything that is on the computer and backs up an exact copy onto the external HD. So if I go through and add 200 files and organize them in different files it will do the same once it backs up.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Network Failure

$

I have a SyncBack 'Group' configured to back-up to a NAS on a local Win7 network.

If I run the group manually, it performs the back-up as expected. All of the profiles in the group back-up to the same NAS.

If I go to any individual profile and check the connection [...modify/Network/Test Connection] I receive a 'Success' response.

If I shedule the same group to run at a specified time, it checks the source and then sends a 'Network Failure' message for each profile.

Run any individual profile and it backs-up just fine.

I can browse to the back-up destination during configuration and the address line is complete. \\MachineName\ShareName is all there.

Need help getting this to run on a schedule. Must be missing something basic.

TIA

Hi,

Can you please try these to see if it helps?

1. Please disable the option "Do not store password. The profile will only have access to local resources" under:

Modify > When > Edit Schedule > Security tab

2. Try entering the credentials to connect to your network drive under:

Modify > Expert > Network settings page

Please read the footnotes provided in the Help > Expert > Network settings page to understand and try the different ways of entering the username credential in the username field and use the "Test Connection" button available in the Network settings page to ensure the connection works as expected, before running the profile.

Thank you.

Hi,

The error message:

Ransomware Detection: The hash value of the file (D:\Tim's documents\O0507P4A.rtf) could not be calculated: Cannot open file "\\?\D:\Tim's documents\O0507P4A.rtf". The system cannot find the file specified

means the Ransomware detection file set under:

Preferences menu > Options > Expert tab is not available or accessible. Hence SyncBack failed to calculate and compare the hash value and stopped the profile run with that error. Please refer to this article for more details on Ransomware detection and how it works:

https://www.2brightsparks.com/resources/articles/ransomware-detection-with-syncback.html

Can you please check if the file ‘O0507P4A.rtf’ is present in the “D:\Tim's documents\” folder? If not, you may have to click on 'Clear' button under:

Preferences menu > Options > Expert tab

to remove the ransomware detection option. Then choose an existing file or create a new ransomware detection file to enable the detection again.

Thank you.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Known issues in Syncbackpro V8

I have got the below known issue in the latest version from one of the links.
•Mirroring a file will fail on the first run if a folder with the same name already exists in the destination (even if the folder is configured to be deleted). This is because SyncBack creates and deletes folders after files have been copied and deleted. New folders are created as needed as files are copied. The folder will be deleted (after the copy has failed) so the second run of the profile will not have a problem (as the folder has already been deleted).

However i dint understand what is actually done.Does it mean that the files will be copied and then the folders of that file will be created? IN our case we are using Mirror profile to copy 1000 + files and folders from Source (which is a network location) to a Cloud base destination (Box). Can you please elaborate what will be the impact in our case of the above known issue.
