SyncBackFree (freeware) • Mirroring with Compression?

$

So I'm looking to mirror a large (42GB) directory that is frequently updated to my NAS unit. I think the file size can be reduced considerably using compression HOWEVER I'm not sure how SyncBack handles mirroring with compression. Will it have to compress the entire 42GB each time it mirrors? Is it going to take a considerably longer time to compare each time than if I left it as an uncompressed mirror on my NAS?

SyncBack achieves Compression by zipping (you can optionally also Encrypt the output). Either way, you have the option to put each Source file in an individual Destination zip of its own (named after each individual filename), or you can put all Destination files in a single-Zip with a global name of your choice. The latter might achieve better overall/total compression, especially if you have many documents that use the same format (and thus may have many strings that are common between files, e.g your address), but yes, you would likely find it slower to update one/few files that change between profile runs using the single-Zip ('one big zip') compression mode.

Whereas one zip-per-file mode is likely to be faster for smaller numbers of changes per day. The other aspect to take into account is the deletion of orphan/Destination-only files that crops up c/o deletions on Source (as implied by the definition of Mirroring). This would be vastly faster (per-file) if the profile needs only to delete a corresponding individual Zip on the Destination than if it had to rebuild the single-Zip on Destination in order to remove the partial content that represented (corresponded to) each deleted Source file.

Hi, you can do this with any current version of SB. Simply make a Group profile (run the New Profile wizard, give Group a name as appropriate and check the 'This is a group profile' checkbox).

In the Group Modify window that opens, add your desired profiles to the Group (note that if you close this window without adding any profiles, the Group will self-delete and you will need to start again). You should add your profiles in the same order as you want them to run (though you can change your mind and promote/demote member profiles that you already added using the list/arrows on the right; you can also add/remove profiles at any time during an edit).

By default a Group runs serially (a.k.a. 'sequentially'), and you should obviously leave it that way or you will defeat the object of having your profile #1 run first (on its own). Press F1 with the Group Modify window open for contextual Help.

Note that it is not possible to have a Group run one profile first (serially) then all the remaining profiles at once (parallel). Mixed-mode (some serially, some in parallel) is not supported. This includes nested Groups, which are possible, but if used, must all be set to run serially (the program will ignore any 'parallel' setting except in a single Group)

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Access Denied for an Administrator

I am setting up SyncBackFree on a 64bit Windows 10 Pro PC.

Configuring "Start with Windows", or "Edit Schedule", I get prompted for a password, I enter the valid user's password, and get a message with the banner "Error (SyncBackFree V8)", and the text "Access is denied".

I tried this multiple times, rebooted, changed the password, and the problem remains.

If I log out and log in as a regular user that is in the Administrators group, all works OK. The UAC settings for both accounts are the same, at the default.

Seems odd that Administrator would throw the Access is denied message and not a regular user.

I have reasons to want to continue to use the Administrator account.

Please help.

Thank you.

To do a number of backups I created a group with 20+ profiles in it. It kicks off around 7:00 PM. It is set so the jobs run sequentially.

Normally, I'm home having supper when it kicks off, and in the morning it's done. Except for once a quarter when we create a new archive. Then the backup takes 4 or 5 days to complete, and the last time I noticed something odd.

The status on the profiles changed constantly. From paused to running to success to aborted to paused. Is this normal? If so, could we get a new normal?

I tried to upload a video screen capture but it was too large to be acceopted, So, it's on my web site at https://www.sourdoughhome.com/movies/2brightsparks.mp4

Does anyone have any idea what is happening, if this is aproblem, and what, if anything, I should do about it?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi,

We have conducted some tests activating the built-in Administrator account, but we haven’t received any errors when scheduling a profile in SyncBackFree or enabling the ‘Start with Windows’ option. Can you please ensure the user account has the necessary Windows user rights as explained in the “User Rights” section of this KB article:

Thank you

I have a strange experience with Syncback and Webdav. If I switch the synchronization on by hand, everything will be fine. But if I let the planner start at a given time, he will give error messages: Syncback will not see the Webdav folder.
What am I doing wrong?

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Backup Vs Mirror

I've set up two backup jobs, but in the job listing one says backup and the other says mirror. I copied the one to create the other, the only difference being the folders from and to. As far as I can see, I have the same options for both.

My goal is to copy from source to destination if a file does not exist in the destination or is changed on the source, and delete any empty folders on the destination.

What is the difference?

How can I change the incorrectly configured job so it is doing what I want it to?

Thanks for the help!

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Filter help

$

Hi

I am trying to define filters for my backup profiles, and struggling. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have the following folder profiles and structures, Movies and TV:
Source \\Server\Movies\
Destination J:\

Folder structure in Movies is:
\101 Dalmations\101 Dalmations.mkv
etc etc
\A Space Odyssey\A Space Odyssey.mkv
etc etc
\Whats New Pussycat\Whats New Pussycat.mkv

In Movies I have two profiles, one to back up folders starting 1 - N, and one to back up folders starting O - Z. I am running into the limitation of the File and Folder selection which is that any new movies also need their boxes checking manually. I'd much prefer to succeed with a DOS Expression Filter. What I have is the following pairs:

\1*\
\1*\* These work. But I can't bring myself to replicate the pair for 0-9 and then again for A - N. Then again for O - Z.

\[1-5]*\
\[1-5]*\* These don't work, even though the Help file suggests that they do. Any advice would be much appreciated. I am clearly missing something...

\\d*\
\\d*\* These don't work either. I thought that \d was the most elegant way of expressing a digit. But no joy. Perhaps because "\" is confused for a child folder starting with "d"?

Folder structure in TV is:
\A Bit Of Fry And Laurie\Season 1\A Bit Of Fry And LaurieS01E01.mkv
\A Bit Of Fry And Laurie\Season 1\A Bit Of Fry And LaurieS01E02.mkv
\A Bit Of Fry And Laurie\Season 2\A Bit Of Fry And LaurieS02E01.mkv
etc
\Yes Minister\Season 1\Yes Minister S01E01.mkv
\Yes Minister\Season 1\Yes Minister S01E02.mkv
etc

Again, I have two profiles, one to back up A - N, and the other O - Z. I have tried to use the same filters as above. The single character filters work, and seem to catch all the season sub-folders and files. The [A-N] variants do not work.

Many thanks in advance for any pointers.

Paul

Hi,

I tried creating a new copy of a backup profile, but I can’t reproduce your issue. Is it possible that you have changed the profile type of the new copy?

To make a copy of a profile, simply select the profile from SyncBackFree’s main-window > press Ctrl-C or right-click on the profile and select ‘Copy’ from the pop-up menu > then give the copy a new name. If you want to change the profile type from Mirror to Backup (or vice versa) then you can do so under:

Modify > Easy > Type settings page

Note that a Backup profile (by default) copies new/changed files from source to destination. To delete empty folders that are present only on destination, configure the option ‘What to do if a directory exists on destination but not on source’ to ‘Delete directory from destination (if empty)’ from:

Modify > Expert > Decision-Files > Folders settings page

Thank you.

I think it's pretty clear what is being asked, and supplying any other information about this seems unnecessary.

I am also getting this error and would like to know why.

Both drives involved are SSD's......if that has any relevance.

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Setting up Drobo - Network error

I have used SyncBack for close to ten years but have recently moved from a Buffalo NAS to a Drobo 5N and am having 'Network Failure' errors when the profile is run automatically (scheduled). When I run it manually, by selecting the profile and clicking 'Run', all is well.

I am running SyncBack SE V7.5.5.0 with Windows 10 and the Drobo is connected via an Ethernet connection.

Has anyone else experienced this? Have I missed a setting? Once again, when I manually run this it works OK.

Hi,

Can you please clarify your question? Do you want to backup multiple folders from the same drive i.e. H:\lavoro\?

If so, you can select/de-select files/folders to backup from: Modify > Simple > Choose sub-directories and files settings page

Or if you want to backup files/folders from multiple drives, then please refer to this forum post for more details:

Thank you.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • just 2 question about dropbox and portable version?

Hi
i'm running v8 last version installation mode 64bit under windows 10 pro 64bit

1)
well when i sync in dropbox syncbackpro does always upload to dropbox in compression mode even my source haven't been changed
is there a way to sync & upload to dropbox only when the source are modified ?
maybe would be a good idea create a folder in dropbox and synch my files without compression?
can syncbackpro check if my source file and the files in dropbox are the same (no changed no modified) ?

2) i have 2 ssd and 2 trascend external hard disk ,and i use the portable version too , always the last version
i'm worried that my serial number will stored in the machine where i use syncbackpro , in short where does it store the license(serial) the portable version?
i use the same serial for syncback pro installation and portable version , i guess i can do it, i don't need 2 license
i use the portable version at work for personal purpose ,just so i can finish my job at home in the week end (i know it's sad work in the week end)

and another question ,why the portable version create empty folder in the host machine ? at work i can't install synchback pro , nobody can install a program , and they have never installed syncbackpro
in the host machine i have these empty folder
c:\Users\Myname\AppData\Local\2BrightSparks\SyncBackPro\
c:\Users\Myname\AppData\Roaming\2BrightSparks\SyncBackPro\
even i don't run as administrator
could be please fixed in the next version ,i have always delete them , i 'm worried just because i work in a legal studio... [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o<

thanks

OK, I figured this one out. I had not expanded and changed the 'More Options' dialogue box in the filter. It was set to use the default 'DOS expressions' which I belatedly realised can't resolve [0-9] or \d etc etc. I switched to 'Regular Expressions' and [0-9] [a-n] etc works.

For reference, at the moment my regex is:
\\[0-9].*\\
\\[0-9].*\\.*
\\[A-N].*\\
\\[O-Z].*\\.*

etc

There is a very handy regex tester website which I used to work this out.

Hurrah for Syncback.

Is there a way to create an empty folder structure on Amazon S3? When the profile runs, the Differences screen shows them all as Skip and the action can't be changed. When I modify the profile, the UI won't allow the option under Decisions/Folders to be enabled, but I have empty folders in my S3 bucket. Other apps can create them, and AWS web console can do it. Any ideas?
