SyncBackFree (freeware) • Re: "Clean Up" not doing its job

I just tested your scenario on my end with a SyncBackFree V8.5.97.0 and have no issues with the Clean Up button. SBFree was able to detect the detect the deleted folder and displays it in pink, and hitting the Clean Up button removes it.

Which version of SBFree are you using? If using latest, then maybe you may be looking at the wrong path? (that is, you are looking at one path in SBFree that shows this folder, but you removed the same folder in another path which caused some confusion, and the same folder in the path shown in SBFree is still there, maybe?)

Please note that we don't actually offer a bespoke profile/schema design service, but I'll offer some advice for this exception.

You can try creating an Intelligent Synchronization profile, but note that Sync is strictly a two-way comparison process (A-to-B, B-to-A) and we typically do not recommend users to sync to multiple devices as unwanted overwrites/deletes on files could easily occur if a strict running order sequence is not met.

It is possible to set up a few profiles to multi-sync them across several devices. However, there are several important details/drawbacks to take note of when making a schema of multi-way sync profiles.

The process will require at least the following steps to ensure complete file synchronization.

1. Home PC <sync> Ext Drv

2. Office <sync> Ext Drv

3. Home PC <sync> Ext Drv

Step 3 is required for changes in Step 2 to be synced back to A.

IMPORTANT NOTE - Please ensure that you are running this design order as per the listed sequence so that data changes in all locations are properly synced. Don't run these profiles concurrently or all at once. Don't skip any steps.

It is important to note that no two (or more) users/PCs can work on the same local file/s at the same time in-between such a schema sync. This would introduce multiple versions of the file (containing different sets of data) to be present on different machines. When the sync process triggers, it will cause the eventual overwrite of one over the other (whichever file with the older Last Modified time stamp will be replaced by the newer, thereby changes in the older file is never replicated and lost forever).

During the schema run/multi-run period, do not let any user or process make any file changes/deletion within these devices or collisions will likely occur.

Do note that if any other process(es) upload any files to this 'group', they would not have the meta-data we use and rely on so they might be processed in unexpected ways.

Hi,
Recently, I don't know why, when I lunch any backup profile, SyncBackFree get stuck displaying the message "SyncBackFree V8 (not responding)".

I have no idea of what happens. I tried to run in debug mode ; the last command executed in the Debug log file is:

17:41:42=ProfileEngineUI.TShowDifferencesThread.Execute.276:Sync begin

It seems something froze the program at this step.
Any help would be greatly welcome.

I was wondering if it is possible to keep the folder and subfolders time and date stamps in sync with the source?

For instance move server1\m$ to server2\m$ and have the folder on server2\m$ say something like 2 PM 2/13/2014 instead of the current time and date. I know this is possible with robocopy switches but can't seem to figure what options need to be checked to make this work with SyncBackPro.

I have found another free backup SW, not as nice as SBF but he is doing the job. The only problem, I need to reconfigure all backup profiles.
I will keep this SW until (I hope one day) SBF is back in life again.
Cheer.

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Cleaning up old back ups

Is there a way to delete old versions of backed up files in a profile? I'm backing up a video folder where I rename files sometimes. I noticed that the back up keeps a copy of all the renamed versions, which is taking up a lot of space. Can I set a policy to keep only the last 30 days of backups, plus a 90 day, etc?

Hi Paul,

It's rather odd seeing such a behaviour. Can you send an email to support@2brightsparks.com with a link to this forum post so we can give you further instructions about this?

Thanks,

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Mirror over VPN --

Hey all,

We are running a mirror session from multiple servers over a VPN to another server to get some offsite backups in place. My issue is when it was local, it would do the scan pretty quick, but over the VPN, it's taking much longer. Too long actually. These servers have over a million files on them, so this might not end up working. We just changed it to offsite today and I really didn't think it was going to take that long. We have a pretty large pipe between the VPNs -- 300mb. I was just wondering if there was a way to keep a local cache of the destination so it doesn't have to rescan every night, or is there no way around this?

Thanks for any insight or recommendations of a better way to do it.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Time Stamps not updated on files

Hello,

In a profile I'm running the differences comes up in time - 1 hour difference.

Syncback says it is copying the file to the destination, but the destination time doesn't change to match the source time.

I can run this profile over and over, but the same files are shown.

Is there anyway to get past this ?

Source is on an old Win98SE (in use because of software) to a destination Win 7 computer run as adinistrator.

Thanks in advance for any ideas - I checked the forum and didn't see anything that would help.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • settings and profiles directory consistency issues

$

Win10 x64, latest v8.5.

In preferences -> Settings, there should be two storage locations instead of one.
1) Storage of profiles
2) Application Settings.ini etc. Currently this one is "The settings are stored here" with no allowance to make this different from "Profile settings".

Or at the very least maintain the same, but have truly application "global" in a separate Registration.ini

Why? At the moment, it is combined into one. Which causes problems when attempting to use profiles in a different directory from command line, etc.

For example, I wish to keep the profile together with my source, which is in one bitlocker'ed VHD self mounted. Destination is another. This way, profile information, fast backup cache info, etc can be kept bitlocker'ed. But the current GUI makes the application want the app Settings.ini in the same location, so when the vhd is not mounted, SBP thinks it's a new installation, and needs to setup from scratch.

Use case example.
a) I want to use Syncback gui to make various backups, I don't care if people can tell, or if forced to unlock at a border for basic backups.
b) Two secret external thumbdrives. The profile is "JournalistSecrets" to backup from one to the other. I do not want anyone to know I have such a profile, nor it's filenames, when I travel through a border. I put the Profile onto the source disk, and use the command line -settings to identify it's location when all the VHDs on disk are unlocked. Currently, this works, but makes (a) all funky. Unless I put a totally separate NI installation on every source disk.

Summary. The option to have Profiles in a separate directory isn't well implemented. The Profile data itself (as well as associated settings, such as log file locations) should be independent of application's settings. The current GUI setting, or -settings command line co-mingles them.

thank you.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Backup not finding sub folders

I am setting up a backup from a mapped network drive to an attached USB hard drive. The mapped network drive is a Onedrive documents folder with all its sub-directories on another PC on the same local network. Both PCs are running Windows 10. From File Explorer I can see all the subfolders on the source drive. When I set up a backup job using Syncbackfree and click Choose sub-directories and files I can see the files in the root directory but I don't see any sub-directories and so of course none are backed up. Any suggestions?

Hi,

You can enable 'Fast Backup' option in SyncBackPro. This option reduces the scan time of a profile by ignoring the destination scanning, which can be enabled under:

Modify > Expert > Fast Backup > Perform a fast backup

When this option is enabled SyncBack builds a database of your Source (during the first run with Fast Backup option enabled) as it is at the time. And i the next run scans that database of Source-last against Source-now and work out the differences. Note the first run of the profile with Fast Backup enabled (or a Rescan backups) will take the same amount of time as without Fast Backup enabled. This is because the Source against Destination will be scanned to identify the file differences on both sides.

For additional details on Fast Backup, please read these KB articles:

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Clear History on Sync Profile(s)

I rebuilt my computer previously running Windows 7 to Windows 10. I am in the process of restoring the profiles for SBP and while they restore fine, I found this recommendation in one of the KBs...
For SyncBackPro & SyncBackSE, you should Force Rescan on any Fast Backup profiles, and Clear History on any sync profiles unless you are absolutely sure the contents of the new Source and Destination are already exactly the same on the new PC as they were on the old PC.
I think I have been looking at the screen too long. I'm hopeful that someone can tell me the steps to clear history of my now imported sync profiles.

Thanks.
