SyncBackPro (commercial) • Re: Clear History on Sync Profile(s)

Hi,

You can clear the history of a sync profile under:

Modify Profile > Expert > Decision-Files > click on 'Clear History' button (which is the last option on that settings page)

However, as stated in that KB article you need to clear the history only when the Source and Destination paths on Windows 10 are not exactly same as Windows 7 PC.

Thank you.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Syncing documents that could be saved to OneDrive

Hi - New user here of SBP and love it. I searched but didn't find my answer, so I hope my question makes sense.

On my computer, my Documents folder syncs to OneDrive through the OneDrive app. In the OneDrive app I have some folders set to always keep local copies of files and others are set to the default, which I think means that OneDrive will remove some local files if space is needed on my computer and replace it with a "shortcut" to the original file, which is still saved on the OneDrive servers.

My question is, how will SBP handle those shortcut files when I backup/sync my documents directory. Will it simply save the shortcut link, or will it somehow know the local file is just a shortcut then download and backup the actual file from the OneDrive servers?

For my backup settings, I mirror my computer to backup drives, so if I delete something on the computer, it will also be deleted from the backup. I also want my backups to save the actual file and not just a link to the file in the cloud.

I probably way over-explained my question, but I appreciate everyone's help. Thank you!

Here to report that the above solution does indeed work as intended.

During a collision the first job to complete did not shut down & after the second completed it did.

Marking solved.

Just to be clear, Windows doesn't include a 'touch' command by default. I'm using 'touch.exe' from the following project on Sourceforge:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/touchforwindows/

Hi,

I guess, you have activated OneDrive’s ‘Files On-Demand’ feature? If yes, then SyncBack profile may fail when backing-up cloud-only files (files that are on the OneDrive server) as they are not available locally. For additional details, please read this article:

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Files missing from the backup copy

$

I am trying to back up from my hard drive to an external hard drive. Windows 10
The backup appears to work and completes the process in about 14 hours
There seems to be a lot of files missing from the back up
My main original folder contains 393 GB in 106135 files 2695 folders
The backup contains 128GB in 40269 files 1454 folders.

Is there some limit at 128Gb It sounds like a special number

I did a trial with just this main folder and the backup contained 347GB Still a long way from the original 393 Gb so the 128GB it is probably not a limit

All I want to achieve is a backup that gets the dates correct, allows incremental backups and allows a reliable restore.

What might explain the three different answers?

Can I do some sort of file/folder compare program that might make the difference obvious?

Any suggestions?
Thanks Graham

Ahh, I see... Thanks for the information!

Not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but it would be nice if the order of profiles in a group could be rearranged also when they are set to run in parallel. Obviously the order doesn't matter in that case, but you may still want to display them in a certain order that's not necessarily alphabetic.

It would be nice if you could give this feature some priority!
(Stupid Outlook changes all my .pst file timestamps when it is started, even untouched archive files,
so approximately 90% of my backup time goes to backup unchanged .pst files to the cloud...)

I backup (mirror) my desktop, documents and pictures folders to 2 different external drives.

Can I use one profile for this since the source and destination folders are the same, or do I need to create separate profiles for each drive?

Thanks!

Sorry, took me sometime to get back to this. I installed the free version, and it sees the Cryptomator drives. Really funny that less privileges give you access to more data :-) Is there a solution of should I stick with the free version?

Even for the KB issue, I believe that you guys should provide a fix as other softwares, like Total Commander, see all of them properly. I don't get why Syncback cannot.

Hi,

Sorry, but a profile in SyncBack can point to only one source and one destination location. So, you have to create 2 profiles in SyncBack to backup files to different destination locations.

I'm running a mirror job to a network destination.
The destination drives sleeps when not in use.

When the Syncback job runs, the drive does not come online fast enough and I always get a 'destination scan failed' error.

Does anybody have a method to query or wake up the network drive before the Syncback job runs?
Or maybe increase the timeout on the destination scan?

Many Thanks!

Hi,
Does anybody have a method to query or wake up the network drive before the Syncback job runs?
You can write a batch/script file that uses the 'Wake ON LAN' event to wake the remote computer and call this in the Program-Before section of the profile run. You can refer to this forum post for more details:

https://www.2brightsparks.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=29&p=46720
Or maybe increase the timeout on the destination scan?
You can add a short delay under:

Modify > When > Misc > Pause for X seconds option

Please read the help file for more details on this option. With Misc settings page opened, press F1 to open the contextual help.

Thank you.

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Setting up schedule wiht blank/empty passwords

I always have passwords for all my accounts. When I get the prompt about "Windows does not allow blank/empty passwords to be used with the Task Scheduler. Would you like this restriction removed?" I am confused about the meaning. If I remove the restriction, am I opening up my pc to having unwanted tasks scheduled with no passwords? What happens if I don't remove the restriction?

Thanks

Hi,

Windows Task Scheduler (by default) does not allow running schedule tasks using a user account with blank password. So, if you want to run schedule tasks with blank/empty password then you need to remove the blank password restriction in Windows. If not, the profile will not run. Read this article for additional details:

https://help.2brightsparks.com/support/solutions/articles/43000335849

If your user accounts have passwords, then please click on the ‘No’ button when you get the prompt about blank password restriction. And un-tick the option ‘Prompt me to remove the blank password restriction on the Windows Scheduler’ from:

SyncBackSE main-window > Preferences > Options > Easy tab

to stop prompting again.

Thank you

Tks Conrad,

That means I could actually make it work, if I send the full backups to my local backup drive and send the diff/incr to a different drive/folder that is synced to the cloud using a sync app like onedrive/dropbox, etc.

I wouldn't be ideal, but it might work, right?

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Upgrade install error - drive or unc share does not exist or is not accessible

I have Syncbackfree (8.5.5.0 - 32 bit) installed on virtual 'F' drive from which it is happily backing up to a couple of other drives.
In attempting to upgrade to 8.5.97.0, after agreeing to the licence terms, I then get a pop up error advising " The drive or UNC share you selected does not exist or is not accessible. Please select another".

I have tried to install from my 'downloads' folder and I have also tried copying the setup file into the folder in which syncback is currently installed and running successfully.

Can anyone provide advice please on how to address this problem.

SyncBackLite (commercial) • Support once purchased etc.

$

Now I'm not going to need a lot of support, but to get this working the way I want I may need some. If I purchase the software, how decent is support, is the turnaround good and I mean within 12 hours?

I'm running the free version at the moment and have been doing so for a few days, really very happy with it so far (have been looking for over a year for something similar to what I have).

I presume I need the "lite" version at least, to be able to switch off the host PC when the last profile has been backed up? Also on the free version, is the background colour available (right click profile)? It does not seem to work on the free version. This I would like very much, as I like to colour code the various types of backups.

I've used FilebackPC for 12+ years and it is the most configurable piece of backup software I have ever come across, unfortunately the developer has dropped off the face of this earth and it was last updated April 2009, before Win 7 was released! Support though was amazing prior to the drop off.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
If I purchase the software, how decent is support, is the turnaround good and I mean within 12 hours?
Please read our support policy for the support options available to all users of SyncBack:

https://help.2brightsparks.com/support/solutions/articles/43000335580
I presume I need the "lite" version at least, to be able to switch off the host PC when the last profile has been backed up?
To shutdown a computer after a profile run using SyncBackPro/SE/Lite/Free versions:

1. You can add shutdown command (shutdown /s) in a batch file and call that file under:

Modify > Expert > Program-After settings page

2. or you can enable the option "Shutdown computer when all the profiles have finished" from the Preferences menu of SyncBack's main interface.

3. Alternatively, you can create a schedule task for a profile and add -shutdown command line parameter to the schedule task. For additional details, read ‘Auto-shut down after running a schedule’ KB article:

https://help.2brightsparks.com/support/solutions/articles/43000335759
Also on the free version, is the background colour available (right click profile)? It does not seem to work on the free version.
Sorry, not supported. Only available in SyncBackPro and SE versions.

Thank you.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Feature Request - Backup and Archive Directories Individually

$

Hello,

I came across multiple times in different clients to a situation where I have thousands of folders with millions of files to be backed up daily (over a million of files with about 400 GB of data). I need to back them up on the cloud space and doing a full backup daily is impossible!!! So the other solution is of course the deferential backup but here is the big problem. These files are not individual and independent files that I can back them up and restore individually. Every folder has a few sub-folders and a few hundreds of files that all of them together consist a database! Every-time there are changes to the database, all the files need to be backed up together as a snapshot, otherwise the backup copy of this database is not proper.

There are a lot of widely used software solutions that are still using old technology database structures. Simply Accounting is one of them, just to name one!

Please consider to add this as an option to the SyncBackPro.

I've been using your software for myself and my clients for many years now. BTW, I was the one to suggest the old days, the option of what you call "Fast Backup"!

Thanks,

Peter
