SyncBack Touch • Synck Back Touch got very slow recently

$

Hi,

I'm running latest SyncBack Pro 9.3.11.0 (x64) on my source and destination PC. The files that are being copied from src to dest, are about 4 GB, a complete Mozilla Thunderbird profile of about 4 GB in size. This profile is located on my local SSD so is the destination location.

Source machine is running Windows 10 Pro (DE) 1909, 32 GB main memory. Destination machine is running Windows 10 Pro 1909 with 16 GB memory. Both machines are using SSD only and the network speed is 1 Gbit. Anti-virus is built-in Microsoft Defender and I already tried to deactivate it and re-run the sync task to no avail so far. Both Windows PCs are members of my local Active Directory (Samba) but this should not count anyway.
SyncBack Touch on both source and destination machines is version 1.3.11.0 and all current Windows updates are installed.

I noticed the slow down in performance today while copying the Thunderbird profile to the source machine. I do this occasionally, guess it was about a month ago I executed for the last time. After 1 and a half hour I stopped the process, because the estimated time left says about 4 hours left. If I remember correctly, the last time I synced, it took about half an hour until it finished.

Basically, the task first deleted all related files from the destination machine and copies all Thunderbird profile files from the source to the destination. Deleting the files from the source seemingly lasts forever, about 3.400 files and 489 folders. Copying the files, as already told above, will finish in about 4 up to 5 hours.

I can provide the SyncBack profile if needed and currently I'm re-running the profile with debug information switched on as outlined here: https://help.2brightsparks.com/support/solutions/articles/43000335603.

I've tested the connection between source and destination with IPerf3 which gave me a bandwidth of about 890 Mbits/sec. So this should be OK for SyncBack, too.

FWIW: I've got almost the same sync profile, but destination is a different PC (HP Elite X2), the purpose of the profile identical, though. I too noticed that the process has slowed down. Currently SyncBack deletes all the files from Thunderbirds profile which took already about 15 minutes still counting. OK, the destination device is connected to Wifi, but deleting about 3.9 GB shouldn't be magic.

Perhaps someone already has got a hint in advance before the job has finished?

Thanks,
Michael

Since I cannot modify the above topic anymore, a new post.

For testing purposes, I've added a share to the destination folder and mapped this share to a drive letter on my source PC. Afterwards, I've copied all files in question to the destination manually. This finished in about 2 (two!) minutes.

This means SyncBack Pro is slow as hell performing the same job. I did not enable any verifying flag (if any available) in the backup profile nor is there anything special setting activated IMO. Please remember: the task is almost that simple: delete all files and folders in destination path any copy all files from source to destination, doing no synchronization - just plain copying.

I've now cancelled debugging because deleting about 20 files left on destination takes already 2 mintues or more :?

Michael

I have been using the free version 8.5 and it works to my satisfaction.
If the Free version works for me, is there any reason to upgrade to SE or PRO during the World Backup Day Sale?

SyncBackPro (commercial) • OneDrive question

I'm a fairly new user of SyncBack Pro, and I have a question about backing up local files to OneDrive.

I've read this article: https://www.2brightsparks.com/resources/articles/backup-to-onedrive.html

Which basically tells you how to Choose a link to OneDrive (Personal), set your login credentials, etc.

Now, my question is....why would I do that instead of just setting up a "Mirror" backup from, say,
"C:\Users\Keith\Photos" -> "C:\Users\Keith\OneDrive\Photos"?

My OneDrive already backs itself up to the cloud, so I'm confused. Was this KB Article written for people who (1) have OneDrive storage but (2) don't have the local OneDrive application installed?

thanks!

Hello, just a question about the versioning database:
why is it created on the spot instead of storing it on the cloud (or locally)?
On the cloud it slows down considerably the fast backup time.
No chance to make it work without comparing on the spot?
(assuming the backup destination doesn’t get changed of course and only syncback has access)
Thanks

I try to connect SyncBackPro to Google Cloud Platform via a Project-ID and get the message that the Google Log-In for this app is not confirmed. What could be the reason?

An other question. Is there any documentation/help about working with SyncBack and Google Cloud?

best regards
Andreas

Hi,

With SyncBackPro, you can backup files directly from your primary location to OneDrive server without needing to keep an extra copy of files on your local OneDrive folder. In addition, you can use features like compression, encryption, verification, versioning when backing-up files using SyncBackPro, and ensure you have reliable and consistent backups for recovery.

Please read our 'Backup Checklist' article for additional details:
https://www.2brightsparks.com/resources/articles/backup-and-recovery-checklist.html

Thank you.

Hi,

Can you send a support ticket to support@2brightsparks.com with your profile configuration (select the profile > right click > choose Export Profile from pop-up menu) for assistance?

Do not post (nor link to) profile on this open forum.

Thank you.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Copying files on destination that supposedly don't exist in source

$

Hi everyone,

well so far I had no issue with SyncBack (Free version on windows 10 64bits) but since the latest upgrade, I ran into one.
Synckback somehow 'refuses' to see that files in source folder exist and insist on copying them onto the destination fodler (an external HDD).
When I click on details, it says 'file doesn't exist in source' (I'm in mirroring mode)
I don't know what's going on, the timestamps are different on both files (creation and modification) but I haven't modified them. Besides how can the software see details of the file and then tell me the source file doesn't exist (be it pictures or sound files)
For info, tried the trial SE Version and ran into the same issue.
It's all confusing for me :?: . Any tips?

All the best,

Phil

Well I realized I wasn't really clear. Actually the weird thing is this:
I tried creating a test profile that mimicked the one that didn't work but when I had to choose which folder to synchronize (the one with my personal videos for this example) I realized Syncback didn't see the files whereas the simple explorer could...Leaves me puzzled..
So what happens if I carry on with this is that, as I'm in mirroring mode, syncback wants to delete the files in my destination since it believes the files have been deleted in my source folder (which they haven't)
Hope that clarify things...

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Encryption settings for AWS S3

$

Hi,
just wondering if someone can provide some simple guidance on how to upload files to S3 with respect to security and usability?

Basically I want to have a safe backup in the cloud and have the files encrypted during transmission and storage. I understand that transmission is https and amazon also has server side encryption (though I can't find it at the moment in the Synchback profile set up). I have seen some information on
encryption routines Synchback can use but it all seems a bit complicated.
What should I use/set up for safe operations without making it so complicated that if necessary I can't use my backup because I cannot access a key file? I am happy to use a strong password and to store that safely but would like to be able to access files, downloand and decrypt these even if my original pc has died and I only have my Amazon access keys and the password for Synchback. Also, while I wish to have my files safe, I am not trying
to prevent government agencies with all their know-how to look at my files.

Hey!

I was wondering if there is a way to start syncing automatically once a device is discovered on a local network path (laptop connects to Wi-Fi)?

Cheers,

I would suggest initiating the sync on the device that connects. If the device connects upon booting then you might run syncback in a startup script on the device after some delay.

For the last week or so, every time I run my profile that mirrors to OneDrive, SyncBack Pro 8 opens a dialog box with the message in the thread title, and the web browser opens to:
Microsoft OneDrive Code

Copy and paste the following code into SyncBackPro:
I haven't been asked to do this since setting it up probably a year ago. I run the profile daily, and it's done it every time for the last week. Any ideas?
