SyncBackSE for WHS 2011 - External Backups

$

Hi, I'm hoping I can get some feedback/info here on using SyncBackSE.

I have Windows Home Server 2011 (4x2TB drives, with about 6.5 GB of data total, my largest folder is 4.5TB).

I am seeking a backup solution, since the WHS 2011 backup wizard has a limit of 2TB on a folder. I want to backup the server using a rotation of drives (Set 1 - 4TB & 3TB, Set 2 - 4TB, 2TB, 1TBs). So, I'm looking for a good solution to make this as easy, efficient and secure (secure, in terms of securing data!).

Would it be a good solution to use SyncBackSE, installed on my Windows Home Server 2011 and set to backup? Is there anything else I'd need to know, consider or, based on this, am I looking at the wrong product to do this.

Thank you!!

Users' Opinion: Which FTP Servers Work Well with SyncBack?

SyncBackPro Users,

In your experience, which FTP servers work well with SyncBackPro? Which FTP servers do not work will with SyncBackPro and should be avoided?

I'm currently testing SyncBackPro with FileZilla FTP server and find it to be a bit lacking. On the other hand, I'm also testing SyncBackPro with Cerberus FTP server and finding that it is working nicely (early testing).

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

SyncBackPro Altering FileNames on FTP Server

Greetings,

I have a sync profile setup to sync a local folder with a folder on our FTP server. Besides FTP, I have full access to the FTP server. When I remote into the FTP server and look at the files that have been synchronized to the FTP folder, I see that the file names have been altered to look something like this:

SBZ!2f2aM980530022122.automagic.pl.zip

I assume the filename modification is a result of SyncBackPro encoding file time-stamp and attribute information directly into the filename for files synced to an FTP server. Is that correct? If so, I have a followup question...

Regards,

Jeff

Exclude a list of directories

Hello,

Is there a solution nowadays for doing a backup with an exclusion list of folders (stored for example in folders_to_exclude.txt, 1 excluded folder per line) ?

This would be really great.

PS : I already posted a question about that some months ago but I thought that maybe there would be some news...

File copying times

I've been using Syncback for several years doing simple backups. I noticed recently, when setting up some new profiles after recovering from a windows 7 issue, that running a backup from a source with, say 25 Gbytes, to a folder on another drive with no data in it (the initial backup, in other words) takes an extremely long time. In fact, I aborted the back up, used regular windows copy to copy over the 25 Gbytes, which took about 30 minutes, and then tested that Syncback handled backing up changes, which it does just fine.

Is it normal for Syncback's copy operation to take significantly longer than a regular windows copy?

Also, are there other ways to monitor progress besides what's displayed in the main panel during backup, where I can't really tell how long the process is going to take.

Any insight would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Check out

Modify > Expert > Copy/Delete > Advanced > 'Make safe copies...' (and try turning it off, but read the contextual Help on Advanced page (press F1) for why it is on by default)

You can also try changing the copy method (Modify > Expert > Copy/Delete > top option)

No, there's no other progress indicator with more detail.

* The above assumes you are using V6 (but your post mentions 'for several years', and SyncBackFree V6 hasn't been available for 'years' yet, so maybe not). SyncBack V3 is discontinued.

Yes, but only for Compression (one Zip per file and vice versa). Otherwise you hit the problem that you cannot 'look inside' a Zip over the FTP protocol, so would have to download it to check the properties of the file inside it to see if it matched the Source file. So, if you're going to have to send/receive the entire Zip content of all the files 'over the air', you might as well just delete & re-copy them anyway.

Delete & re-copy is something we have to do for single-Zip (all files in one Zip) anyway (for reasons we trust are obvious: if not, see the Help). But if we encode the Size & LastMod of the inner file 'on the outside' (i.e, in the name) of an individual Zip, we can avoid that by reading just the name and doing a little decoding.

This does not happen for files stored 'raw' (not zipped)

It might help if you excluded all of them at first and then just re-included all (only) the ones you want)? But if you have 1000 folders and want to exclude 500 and include 500, you have a lot of clicking to do.

That is to say, use the de/selection function available via

Modify > Simple > 'Choose...'

You can also add masks in Filters (if appropriate) and on closing, the Filter dialog auto-invokes the de/selection process, evaluates all your filters against current de/selections (if any) & proposes de/selecting the matches/non-matches for you automatically. But that depends on whether you can express the wanted/unwanted folders using wild-cards...

Yes, it's a little bit like this: I have several hundreds of MP3 albums (100 GB) that I want to synchronize on a 64 GB card.
So I want to do an exclusion list of albums that I don't want on my 64 GB (hundreds of albums).

XCOPY X:\music\ Y:\ /EXCLUDE:AlbumsNotWantedOnCard.TXT

maybe?

Type

XCOPY /?

in a command prompt for more help with syntax if needed.

Hello Dave,

Thanks for your tip.

Yes now I do with XCOPY, with something similar than this :
XCOPY X:\music\ Y:\ /EXCLUDE:AlbumsNotWantedOnCard.TXT

It works.

The only thing is that it doesn't take into account deletions on source. I would like that if I delete a folder on source, it is also deleted on destination (that's why I initially wanted to do it in SyncBack, that has this feature).

Ok, I think I understand. Here's my followup questions:

I'm trying to do a sync that that is shown in the chart that I included at the bottom of this posting. The end-goal is here is to sync Folder 1 and Folder 3. Folder 2 is just the intermediary.

So here is the problem I'm having:

1) I setup an initial sync between Folder 1 and Folder 2. Folder 2 is initially empty. The sync configuration is setup to compress and encrypt each file. Compression to a single file is disabled because it's a smartsync profile.

2) The files created in Folder 2 by the sync between Folder 1 & Folder 2 do NOT have the Size & LastMod of the inner file 'on the outside' (i.e, in the name) of an individual Zip (because its a local sync and not an ftp sync?).

3) Because the Size and LastMod of the inner file are not encoded into the name of the zipfiles in Folder 2, won't the FTP sync between Folder 2 and Folder 3 fail? Doesn't the sync between Folder 2 and Folder 3 depend on having the Size and LastMod info encoded in each zip file name? If so, how do I fix this problem? When SyncBackPro syncs Folder 1 and Folder 2 can I force SyncBackPro to encode the Size and LastMod into the file name so that the sync between Folder 2 and Folder 3 will work properly?

Regards,

Jeff

Are you sure you mean 'sync'? That is, copy independent changes in both Folder-1 and Folder3 back and forth via-Folder-2? Because if so, who's going to re-encode the Zip-name on the FTP side (Folder 3) with any changes to reflect changed attributes of the edited file inside? Pro won't do that - it's a one way process. It can react to change on that side (insofar as whether the encoded values match Source/Left or not), but not instigate it, except by virtue of compressing over FTP (2>3, i.e, in one direction only) and by overwriting the Zip with the old stamp with a new Zip with a new stamp

mcjathan wrote:The end-goal is here is to sync Folder 1 and Folder 3. Folder 2 is just the intermediary

Not sure why an intermediary is needed? If you state what you need to achieve (and why), rather than state how you think it should be carried out, it might help visualize it. But you should bear in mind that no profile can handle (and bi-laterally compress/extract, etc) Zips on both sides. If you try, one side's Zips will be processed as though they were normal files (such as DOC). If you point a profile at Zips in Folder-2 and tell it to Compress them to Folder-3 over FTP, it will compress (and encode the Zip-names) again... (xxxx.zip.zip)

If you actually mean Backup or Mirror (copy changes 1>2>3 only, that's different.

Versioning identical files

We are using SyncBackPro in backup mode, with versioning.
Today I checked some logs and found some files that have been versioned although they are identical, see attachment. The only difference is the "last accessed" time-stamp, but we chossed to "Do nothing, skip file" when properties or case of the filenames are different.

For the no-germans:
Erstellt - created
Geändert - modified
Letzter Zugriff - Last access

Re: Versioning identical files

Hi

The Versioning logic doesn't test for 'same properties' - it simply reacts to the 'live' backup being replaced, and Versions the file that is being replaced. Hence it's the decision to re-copy the file (from Source) in the first place that governs whether the previous Destination copy is Versioned.

We don't ever base decisions on LastAccessed (there is no such code). Is it possible that Last Access maybe set the archive attribute (which is not shown in your screenshots)? That attribute isn't used in comparisons by default, but it can be set to. Likewise we don't base decisions on hash values unless it is set to to do so, and certain conditions are met. There are numerous other attributes (not visible in your screenshots) that can be set to trigger a copy ('represent a difference'), but none of them are the defaults.

To try and take it any further, we'd need to try to get debug info from a run where this actually happens (yes, appreciate it may be difficult to tell / when to capture the info, but there's likely no option - we need to see what is logged as the basis for the decision).

You could use RoboCopy (free from MS or included with later versions of windows) or Xxcopy (free & pay for versions).
Both these programs are much more powerful than xcopy and include switches to delete extra (orphan) files on the destination.

Alternately, with a bit of minor editing, you could copy & paste your exclusions list directly into the FSExcMasks= section of [Profile Name]_Settings.ini.

Of course it might be better if SyncBack allowed multi-line entries to be added to the include or exclude filters with the [+Add] button. Then the whole list of exclusions could be copied and pasted directly within SB.

Bottom region of Schedule popup lost off bottom of screen

$

The bottom of the Schedule popup window is always off the bottom of the screen on our laptop, and cannot be made visible. Comparing what I see on this screen during use, and what is shown in the manual, the part which has the check box "Do not store password ...." and the [OK] and [Cancel] buttons are off the bottom. They are off the bottom when this popup is maximized, too, and no vertical scrollbar shows. When the window is non-maximized, I cannot push the window high enough to access the bottom edge to size it up smaller. After reading the Google search results, which suggested putting the mouse pointer at the top edge to produce the double headed sizing arrow, I tried and that also fails. Also the trick where I right-click at the top of this window and choose "Move" or "Size" from the pop-up menu choices also do not work for this.

Details:
SBF Version 6.4.3.0 upgrade just downloaded and installed (upgrade from 6.3.?,?)
Video driver on laptop updated during this testing, version 8 => 9.

This happens on our laptop running Win 7 Home Premium 64. The video setting is what was set at delivery, using the native resolution, 1366X768. I tried rotating 90 degrees. Then I could see the full vertical length of that window, but the width bled off the "sides" (top & bottom). I tried to shorten the vertical size if that window, but it could only be lengthened. There must be some minimum number of pixels to this popup? ... which is greater than 768?

But, it shows mostly fine on the desktop running Win 7 Pro 64, with a bigger 1920X1080 monitor. But on that, this window in question just barely squeezes in vertically with the taskbar set on "auto-hide". It cannot be shortened vertically, either. If it is not on auto-hide, then the [OK] and [Cancel] buttons are eclipsed.

Any suggestions? Is it a Windows problem, or an obscure setting in SBF? Do the SBF program parameters need to be adjusted for an update? I don't recall this problem with any other software.
