Re: Windows8 To Go problem

AFAIK we (try to) force profile storage to [the portable device], otherwise if it was set to [somewhere on the PC it was plugged into], then when (if) you remove it and walk away, you'd leave your profiles behind. (I guess you realise that, this is more 'background for other readers')

I just installed SE 6.5.4.0 on a flash drive on Windows 8 and this is exactly what happens (ProfileDir= is set to 1, and the option to change it in the UI is locked)

Did you by any chance export a working setup (copy the program folder) instead of a fresh install? If so (and in any case), I suspect all you need to do is edit ProfileDir=2 to ProfileDir=1 in the SETTTINGS.INI on the flash drive copy)

Sorry, I'm confused. Pro doesn't store SFTP keys, it 'uses' them. That is, you (optionally) specify the location of a pre-existing key file in the appropriate setting on the FTP settings page. Ipso facto, you tell Pro where the key is, it doesn't choose the location (and doesn't store anything itself, nor does it create keys)

I am talking about the server key. Ipso facto, when you connect to a host for the first time... Like when you SSH for the first time and you get the new key message "do you trust 23:a4:2b:34:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:23:c8:22?"

I was able to find the key in WinSCP (SFTP), and WS_FTP (SFTP).

Hi, we just accept the server key. It isn't stored anywhere.

Aaaah. That's not good security, especially now with the man-in-the-middle attacks. But thanks for answering, Mickey.

Does SyncBack Really SupportSFTP!? Where are the SSH key st

Hello,

I tried to sync a local map with a remote map on a SFTP server, but did not yet manage to get that running.

The remote SFTP server is the bitvise SSH server free for private use. I am of course using keypairs for server and client.

So I did setup a SyncBackPro profile using my keypair. And of cause the connection is not established because the public key of the ssh-server is required as well.

So, I hope SyncBack does support this, and if not please make it a high prio change request.

Sincerely

Louis

Mirror profile created via SnBackFree V6 deleted all data

$

Hi everyone!

THIS IS THE DETAILS OF MY PROBLEM:::

First: I have created a profile of mirror type with deleting files and folders available in the destination and not available in source via a file-backup program(syncBackFree).

Second: I have chose the source and destination of the mirror bakcup.
The destination was an external HD, whose litter was H:
The source was a partition on my internal HD.

Third: I have synchronised the mirror profile.

Fourth: The next day, I have not stuck my external hard disk which I have determined as destination via SyncBackFree program. However, I have stuck another external hard disk of mine, which has an used space of about 956GB .

Fifth: When the synchronisation time of mirror comes, the SynBackFree program have checked the destination which is defined in its database as (H:) and as long as my external HD(as I said) has taken the litter (H:) because it was the next litter, then the program deleted all this data and copied the files and folders from the source to hard disk.

Finally: all my previous data has accidentally been deleted by program because I said I have accidentally stuck my other external which has a lot of data.
-----------------------------------
I was shocked when I saw this because as I said that I didn't realised this until I saw my used space of my hard has decreased because SyncBackupFree program didn't notify me when doing a synchronised mirror backup .

Anyway, I have tried recovering my data deleted by using some programs:
1- the Power Data Recovery program with its three ways available:
With Undelete Recovery
With advance scan Recovery
With Deep Scan Recovery

However, all of them didn't get back all my data deleted, although the time taken was about ten and half hours
The Deep Scan Recovery showed me this listed after doing full scan as the two screenshots below:

As you see the result of Deep Scan Recovery doesn't sound like my folder and files organization deleted at all. So even I have saved those files, I will not get back my organization.

Although the result of advance Recovery and Undelete Recovery below sound like the organization which was for my folders and files deleted, I didn't find all data returned back. Because when I opened some folders in the result, for instance Macrium Image, I didn't find all files which were inside the folder as they were before deletion.
Even when I have ticked the box in front the parent folder in result, I didn't see that size of the selected files(screenshot below) like the used space of HD deleted which was about 915GB. 'About 415GB is still missed'

2- Testscan program, but it didn't find my data at all.

3- I have tried Partition Recovery Wizard with quick scan and full scan, which took about 14 hours. However, it didn't found my previous data deleted. Instead of that, it found the existing data.

A a result, I really have decided that all recovery data programs are absolute nonsense.

In fact, my external hard drive had so wide variety of files and folders that I didn't remember them. I need a program to return back all my data deleted as it was in my HD with the same organization(Folders, subfolders, files) archived in the central repository on my hard disk.

This screenshot below shows the organization of folders, subfolders and files inside my deleted hard disk as I have organized . In each folder, there are many other sub folders and files.

NB: The most Files, in particular those whose sizes are larger than 5GB were Detected in the result.
So Macrium images weren't shown in the result.

I really have been told by somebody that:
Bear in mind that by default, the program will display to you what its
intentions are before performing any file processes, unless you
configure it to run in such a way that this display of intentions is
suppressed, which is your choice and at your risk.

So I really would like to add something else about you said below:

I really didn't see such settings(notify me when a synchronized mirror will be ran) to be configured.
I really configured my profile to delete data on that side (disk) that is
not on the 'other side. Also, when I synchronised the mirror profile, I
have configured it to be run even the user is logged out.
As I said
before when I have accidentally plugged my external hard disk full of
data instead of the one empty I have decided to be the destination of
mirror, I wasn't notified by the program that time of synchronised
mirror comes. However, when I saw the used space of my hard drive began
decreasing, I have realised that the mirror began and because my drive
assigned with the letter defined in the database of SyncBack program as
its destination, and quickly shout of my computer to prevent the process
from completion. It is true the process has been interrupted. However,
it caused some data deleted.
After that, when I run my computer a gain
I have deleted all SyncBack profiles created while logging in to a
Windows user account. However, there were other synchronised SyncBack
mirror profiles created while logging in to another Windows user
account. So after a little while, I found the synchronised mirror
profile configured while logging in to another Windows user account
began running, so this time it completed deleting the rest of my data
and then copied the the files of source without realising this because
the used space of hard drive has already decreased with running the
first mirror profile.

By the way, Data Recovery programs detected some of my files; however, those, in particular, whose sizes are larger than 5GB were not detected at all. Also, I would like a program to recover all my data with same orginazation. I don't want to collect them again after recovering them. For instance, If you have a look at this picture attached, you will see that there are some partitions detected I didn't know for what.

I am awaiting your reply in due course

SFTP works just fine in SyncBackPro. I, and many other people, use it on a regular basis.

You configure your SyncBackPro profile to use the *private* key (as per the help file). The public key is not required by the client and used by your SFTP server. When connecting the SFTP server encrypts the challenge using the public key (that you've configured it to use). Your SFTP client (SyncBackPro) decrypts it using the private key which is the only thing that can decrypt it. That is how you establish the connection using a key pair.

Thanks for the confirmation on how it is designed to work, and your assumption that we used a standard settings.ini file is correct. However when I changed it to ProfileDir=1 in the settings file and then started Syncback it made no difference. New profiles are still saved to the users profile directory and did not display in SyncBack. Also a profile copied to the program directory was not seen either. Is there another setting somewhere?

The full error message on trying to run a profile is "Cannot connect to MyOutlookBackup : The network path was not found"

This profile has been running without issue, to my knowledge there is no aspect of the destination that has changed, the directory is verified as existing, there is plenty of space on the drive.

Any help please?

If needing to review a log file somewhere - where is this stored by default as I cant see one - thanks.

Hi

I missed the significance of the Windows8ToGo aspect previously (I didn't realise the full significance of what that meant ) and we haven't actually tested any of our software in that environment. We are going to look into this (once we get the appropriate 'certified' hardware), but I understand from the dev dept there might be quite a few stumbling blocks (for example, I gather there are signs after a quick Google that a lot of silent folder re-direction goes on). Plus, our NI version is designed to install on a 'dumb' ext device, whereby the OS is on the actual PC it plugs into, not an ext device which also contains the OS...

But talking with the dev dept, we think the problem suggests the user you are running SE 'as' doesn't have write access to the folder SE is installed in (on the flash drive). The results you describe sound like what happens if the code that saves a profile can't write to where you set it (which if it detects it lives on a flash drive, it will lock to the program folder anyway), then it will try to emergency-default to the user-folder (and if that is on the PC rather than on the flash drive, that smacks of redirection by the OS), but because it detects it is on a removable device, it doesn't read from there thereafter. A bit of a Catch-22, but you may be able to resolve it by changing the permissions on the folder where SE is installed to Full for Everyone.

I gather there are musings along the lines of coding in something whereby if it detects it is installed on an ext device, and it can't store profiles in the program folder as it should, to stop with an error, rather than try to silently work around it and cause more confusion...

"The network path was not found" is a Windows error message (#53) that the Windows API we use returned to our code when we tried to establish a network connection. We can't exactly argue with Windows (it doesn't listen). Right-click profile > View Log might get you a log that says exactly the same error message if this is happening on a manual run as soon as you try to start it(?)

Given you haven't stated how you are trying to connect to it (what is in the Destination box, assuming this is the Destination, for example), it's hard to speculate...

Nor have you quoted your full version number x.x.x.x. or your version of Windows, by the way. But I'm guessing neither changed since the profile used to run OK (?), which suggests something else did (change)...

Replied via parallel support ticket.

For other readers, the basic problem was:

Mirror profile set with Dest = H: to (obviously) delete all files on H that were not present on Source
The drive with H: allocated to it by Windows was disconnected by the user
At some point Windows allocated drive-letter H: to a different disk
The profile was run thereafter, very likely Unattended, presumably the user not realizing the above had taken place
The profile correctly deleted all files on (the device now allocated as) drive H: that were not present on the Source - as it was configured to do. This was very likely all of them...
The profile correctly wrote the entire contents of the Source onto that alternate device, as it was configured to do
This re-writing probably destroyed any chances of recovering the deleted files on that new H drive (because it overwrote the areas of the disk - where the deleted files were - with new data)

Unfortunate, but the profile did exactly what it was configured to do. The problem is that the devices had/were changed in the meantime. User was directed to this article, which may help prevent such a situation in future. Other methods (addressing a drive by its LABEL or SERIAL) are possible in the commercial versions, but not in the freeware.

I have now tested it using an account with administrator privileges and that will write to and read from the program directory. Most of our user accounts are not local administrators so we would have to give write access to everyone for the program directory which defeats the object of having non administrative accounts.

Windows8ToGo, whilst on a USB stick, acts as if it is a local hard disk so user profiles etc. are on the stick. The local machines primary hard disk is not visible to the OS and everything is on the USB, there is no OS on the PC. In this situation I believe that SyncBack should operate as it would on a normal PC as this is very different to having SyncBack installed on a seperate USB stick.

Many thanks for the feedback on why this is happening and I look forward to an update that will work correctly on a Windows8ToGo device.

Thank you so much indeed,

I really would be repeating the program(SyncBackFree) is good. However, the fault is mine because I did:
1- Set mirror profile with deleting the files not available in source.
2- I set mirror profile to be synchronised regardless of whether the Windows user is logged or not.
3- I forgot the new drive plugged in to my laptop, although it assigned with the same drive letter as it is in the database of SyncBackFree.

4- Two mirror profiles created with two different Windows users have suddenly been run one after the other. In other words, when I realised the first mirror profile was run, I have shout off my computer immediately to avoid completing the process. Then, it is really interrupt.
However, when start my compute again, the other mirror profile has also run without realising it because I was logging in to another Windows user account.

I have tried many Data Recovery software,(Recovery My files, TestSacn, Partition Recovery Wizard, and MiniTool Power Data Recovery 6.6. But none of them returned all my data with same organization.

So I would like you to kindly let me know if there are any other data recovery programs can be doing what I am seeking for.

Almost certainly not if the products mentioned were unsuccessful, because there were presumably hundreds of write operations (c/o the copying of other files from your PC) mixed in with the delete operations of 'orphan files' it was also performing. SyncBack does not queue file operations in any particular type order (it does not copy first, delete afterwards, for example) but processes each folder branch as it encounters it by recursion, performing whatever operations are appropriate for that location. The numerous write operations have almost certainly corrupted some or all of the space on the disk where the deleted files were (corrupting them or replacing them altogether)

Hi,

I would like to say that the help and explanation of this feather is somewhat lacking,

I have Google this for days and still can't get this feather to work properly.

What are the best practices for fast backup to Amazon S3, FTP, NAS, etc …?

And what will be created on the backup end-station, as in the directory structure, or compress file structure.

is the backup place in one location, or does it use %dayofweek% to create sun, mon, tue, wed, ...?
The next time the backup runs will it overwrite the previous files?

Thanks.

BTW: if you disable fast backup, how does the back work?

I want to limit the amount of bandwidth I use to upload these files to Amazon S3, and I need a full backup on every Friday, but incremental on Mon-Thu. What is your recommendation for such a task using your software?

need to run a profile ONLY if a batch file returns the right exit code. Can't remember where I found that a few months back.

Would be grateful if someone could put me out of my misery and remind me...

Hi David thanks for coming back to me.

Yes something had changed I just hadn't realised because it was considerable time back but this is the first time that the error became manifest.

It was the fact that the destination address for Fast Backup (Full), as opposed to incremental as norm, was intended to be a subfolder of the destination "Backup" folder but somewhere along the lines it retained a redundant file path.

As it had been some time I hadn't realised there were two destination addresses that were relevant which I needed to verify.

Anyway sorted now - cheers.
