Re: Setting personalized backup options

Dave Wilkins Sir,
You explained me so beautifully and finally I found ways to tweak what was my exact need.
The directories I needed to mirror are very specific therefore the default option of mirroring some extra files creates problems for me. I had a very strong feeling SyncBack has the personalization options which I need. I must say I had to pinpoint what I needed with great difficulty, which was solely because I am a total novice on computer basics. I am not ashamed to confess I had to 'hit and run' 12 times before I finally Achieved it.
You are best Sir.
Thank you once again Sir.

I had 7 folders in my D: drive out of which I had mirrored 5 folders. Rightly so the other 2 folders were ignored while mirroring. After that I created 2 more folders, before I toggled my options and put them to ignore new folders. These new 2 folders got mirror enabled automatically perhaps due to your default system which says "it is better to copy unwanted stuff than to miss stuff you might want to back up". So I toggled 2 new folders and disabled them.
After that, I ran program. Target folders of these two folders did not get deleted. I tried it many times yet nothing happened. Then I manually deleted both target folders and ran program. This time these folders did not get recreated in target directory.

Is is OK?
And if yes, do I need to physically delete target folders which were mirrored then unselected?

Thank you in advance Sir.

Finally a resolution.

I ran one instance of syncback on a server with Symantec antivirus protection and a second version on an identical server without Symantec and the one without Symantec ran perfectly, it hasn't misssed a beat.

My conclusion is DO NOT USE SYMANTEC!!!!!!!!!!

all the very best, Karl

Thanks for that, and for taking the time to report back. We've created a KB article accordingly

Sir,
To me it sounds highly illogical. The very purpose of option 'Mirror' is defeated. You have set so many alert boxes which take precaution that no files/folders get deleted without notice. Moreover 'Mirror' essentially means 'Literally Exact Copy'. If any user is careless it is his fault not of this software.
I have said all above only because I love this software, not to amplify faults, but I also know I am still novice on software. Therefore I must rely on your technical knowledge based on actual experience.
I am prepared to give myself enough time to get more familiar to this software, before I re register my problems.
Btw, I am truly obliged to find such instant responses on this support site. This is what makes a software more strong and user friendly.
Thank you Sir.

I want to make 1:1 backups of my SSD C: disk and D: data disk.
With the SSD I get

How can I make 1:1 images of the disks?

Hi

As per Help > Quick Start > Understanding Backup and Synchronization - and reprised here:

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... g-software

SyncBackSE/Pro are not designed to (and can not) make an exact copy of a system drive.

'Access Denied' is a Windows error (error #5, as shown) whereby Windows reports that the user you are running SE/Pro 'as' does not have the permissions (etc) to perform something the profile is set to do. Windows tells SE/Pro, SE/Pro quotes that back to you

We have a Knowledge Base article on 'Access Denied'

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... or-message

but aside from that cannot offer bespoke / one-to-one support in solving Access Denied errors: it's difficult enough when you can see the various 'opposing' settings, impossible when you cannot...

You, as an expert, can you tell me if the standard Windows 7 backup is enough to make exact copies? It's only ment to do this 3 or 4 times a year beside the weekly data backups I make with SynnckBackSE

As a User myself, I would recommend you use a disk imaging software for backing up your system disk and using Syncback for your Data disk, a couple to look at would be Acronis or Macrium Reflect, the latter can be used for free to make full images 3 or 4 times a year if that is what you want.

Is there any option to restart the scheduled tasks in windows xp ?

example, i would like to upload the files to a remote ftp server every day at 22.00 hours. but unfortunately exact 21.58 hours internet got dropped and restored after 22.10 hours. Definitely the scheduled task will be failed and it will not retry in windows xp and retry options are available in server operating system and latest windows versions ( Windows 7 and Windows 8. Could you please help me if you have any solution to retry the task at event of first failure in scheduled task.

I'm greatly thankful to you.

Bijeesh.

Profile shows as not scheduled, but group profile is

I've created a number of profiles and assigned them to a group profile. The group profile is scheduled, but the individual profiles show up as 'not scheduled' (red color, alarm clock as icon). The profiles are running fine on the defined group schedule, so maybe this is a bug?

Martin

Was I wrong about this product?

I don't think SyncBackFree is what I need, but maybe I'm using it incorrectly.

It appears to me that this software can't do backups, it only mirrors one disk to another. I need backups. Something that allows me to go back several weeks or months and restore a specific file from a specific time period.

Include the PC-Name automaticly

Is there a possibility to include the pc-name within the path-name via variable or is the only possibility the registry-variable, because it is very very long?

Hi

You probably need Incremental (or Differential) backups, or Versioning. None of these are supported in the freeware - you'd need to upgrade to a commercial version

Free 30-day trials are available

http://www.2brightsparks.com/assets/sof ... _Setup.exe
http://www.2brightsparks.com/assets/sof ... _Setup.exe

The differences are here

http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/compare.html

Do not uninstall SyncBackFree or you will defeat the auto-profile import feature (also available manually from any 'lower' to any higher' installed versions)

The SE & Pro versions can be installed in parallel with the Free version and/or each other. Do not install any 'model' to the same folder as another (just accept the default folders for an easy life). The SE & Pro versions will uninstall cleanly if you decide not to purchase. If you do decide to purchase, the serial number will unlock whichever version you decide to license. There is no need to uninstall the 'trial' and download a 'registered' version. Entering the serial number converts the former to the latter. Any version you decide not to keep will uninstall without affecting the version you do keep (if any).

(Note: any auto-profile import will not include the Schedules (to avoid double-triggering). If you want to switch your Scheduled profiles over, you need to delete the Schedules from the version where they were created and re-create them from the version where you want them)

Generally, the Scheduled Task itself won't fail (unless you have it set to not run if a certain network resource is unreachable). But if the Task does run (and trigger the SB profile) that profile will fail (FTP unreachable) and record the fact. There's no feature in SB to retry (because it's closed now, after logging the failure) - we depend on the trigger process itself repeating (or a manual trigger instead)

Re: Profile shows as not scheduled, but group profile is

Hi

By "not scheduled", do you mean the Next Run column is blank? If so, I guess you're not using the top option on the Preferences menu, and you're looking at the individual profiles 'outside' the Group. Bear in mind it is possible to Schedule a profile individually, and* via one or more Groups, so when listed individually, a profile will only display a NextRun date/time if it's configured for the individual profile directly. If you expand the Group, you'll likely see the Group has a NextRun value and so do the profiles listed within it (but faintly, to show that is 'c/o another process', i.e the Group)

The red listing and alarm-clock overlay is independent of this, and is because you have the option set to 'Highlight profiles that have not run successfully in the last X days'. I suspect those that have run in the last X days (and say so) had errors?

If you do use that option at the top of the Preferences menu, it may all look simpler...

* imagine you had a Group that was Scheduled to run daily at 0100 but you want one of the profiles in it to run twice a day. You could simply Schedule that profile individually for 1300 to have it run every 12 hours (unlike the rest) - once c/o the Group and once c/o its own Schedule. And so on.

Where are the SSH key stored, please?

Where can I find the keys that Syncback stores for the SFTP servers? I did spend 30 minutes searching, but nothing.

I am upping my security a little and decided to verify the keys instead of blindly clicking 'ok'.

To find what they SHOULD be, I am logging into the server with SSH and then doing 'ssh localhost' and I get the key warning, and I assume it must be the same one that Syncback is supposed to get for SFTP.

So, I need to find the keys that Syncback has stored for each server to verify them.

Thank you.

Windows8 To Go problem

On our Windows8 To Go USB stick the SyncBackSE Preferences/options/Expert settings for the profiles directory is greyed out and cannot be changed. The settings.ini file has ProfileDir=2 but the top option is selected and can't be changed. No profiles are available to use and creating a new one places it in the users profile directory but does not show it in the profile window. This is using the latest version (V6.5.4.0) which is fine on Windows 8 on a Laptop and also 8.1 preview. Is this a bug or is there a setting that needs to be set?
