Hi Conrad,

Thank you very much for your assistance. You were spot on. The report size exceeded the Office 365 10MB attachment limit (25MB message size limit).
Thankfully the report is highly compressible and so with compression turned on we are now getting our backup results.

Many thanks once again for your help and for bending your rules.

Cheers

While magnetic media is great for large backups, it is suspectable to outside corruption; Magnets, extreme hot/cold, hardware failures etc. I look at CD/DVD/BlueRay as archival media. ie Once a year a burn a disk of family photo's and video.

That said unless the software is capable of spanning disks, it is worthless to me. There are many freeware applications for my needs.

I own Pro.

Try creating a new profile and re-configure your settings in this new profile, then run it to see if the issue persist.

Please state your Source and Destination path? And what is your profile type? AFAIK, SBF works fine with SSD.

Only a SmartSync profile (that has run once already, so it has a database of 'previous-state each side' to search for possible candidates) has a chance to replicate renames/moves by renaming/moving (assuming the file system format of your target system permits that). Backup & Mirror profiles can also replicate the new structure, but only by 'deleting old / re-copying new'. SmartSync profiles that have no database yet (or you Clear it), or where no potential matches are found in it, will fall back to this delete/re-copy mode automatically.

Bear in mind that if the file has been moved and edited, it will certainly fail (as the hash values won't match, so it won't be considered) so the slower method will be used.

For more information about renames/moves, please read the Help file on the section 'Smart Synchronization'.

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Arbitrary number of incremental backups/Full backups

I'm currently using V3 free to do a plain mirror of my files but want to improve it by using some sort of incremental backup or possibly versioning.

Is it possible with SE to have an incremental backup that isn't simply day-of-week based? I would like it based on the number of backups instead of the day they were executed as I don't backup on a regular schedule.
E.g.
    Full (1)
    incremental
    incremental
    Full (2)
    incremental
    incremental

Deleting the previous set once the new full is started - or even better: retain 2 full backups with their corresponding incremental parts. The above example would allow you to roll back a minimum of 3 days, whereas the 7-day example I see posted on the forum only gives a minimum of 1 day as I understand it.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Execute backup using different user

I've been using this product for a year or so and love it. But with the fear of ransomware out in the world I'm trying to set up my backup a little bit differently. I currently have my backup set to run in the everyday using my username and password to a mapped drive (little media server upstairs). Everything works fine, but I would like to change the permissions associated with executing the backup. I've created a user account called "backup" and have given it full permissions for the backup folder. I then gave my user account read only permissions. The reason for this is, if I or my wife get hit with ransomware our accounts can't encrypt the data on the mapped backup drive, only the "backup" account can write to the mapped drive. I can get the backup to run using the "backup" user account with no problems when I do it manually. When I leave it to run during the day it never executes. It states it ran successfully the last time it was run manually (a few days ago) and shows the next run time is according to schedule. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

Hi,

Do you plan to do the sync back at home when both computers are connected on the same network? Or remotely of the internet?

BTW, you haven't mentioned which version of SyncBackSE you are using.

Thanks,

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Re: Last Run and Successful Run dates incorrect

$

Hi, the subject matter we will be discussing in this post will be focused on your 64-bit PC only (since that is where the issue is coming from).

Before we start, that screenshot shows you have a Group titled "AAgroup" with nested member profiles within it. Can we assume those member profiles within the Group are the same two profiles which are currently visible outside the Group? In other words, you have the option "Only show groups and profiles not in group" disabled under Preferences menu, which would mean you have configured it to display grouped profiles both as part of the group and independently.

If so, this is what I can see based on your screenshot:

- There are two profiles shown, with the Last Run & Last Successful Run date/time (D/T) stamp logged as 25th Jan, which shows the last run that was performed manually by you.
- The NextRun D/T value on the Group (which you have set up a Schedule for) shows the time stamp as calculated by Windows Task Scheduler. And it shows the value of 26th Jan 0400 hours.
- However, you stated that the screenshot was taken on 28th Jan. But that contradicts with the fact that the NextRun D/T value is stamped with 26th Jan.
- Since a valid and working NextRun stamp should always be set in the future, it could only mean two things:
(i) either your Task Scheduler is stuck at showing the NextRun value on 26th Jan forever, which means the scheduled task hasn't been running at all, contrary to what you believe that they were, OR,
(ii) your system clock in Windows at time of screenshot 28th (real-time) thinks 26th is in the future.
- If (ii) is true, it would mean the clock is at least 3 days wrong, so that it will really run next on 29th 0400 or later.

In order to investigate further, we would need the following:

- Have your automated Scheduled run perform as usual on the 30th or 31st Jan 0400. Then provide us with:

- an attachment of a sample page-1 of that latest profile log from your 64-bit PC which lists the date/time the scheduled task was run
(note that we need the actual file attachment and NOT the screenshot). You can attach files to your replies by using the Attachments tab below the text box.

- another screenshot of SyncBackFree's main user interface showing the incorrect LastRun and the NextRun D/T value. Take this screenshot after the scheduled run (discussed above) was performed. We can then compare the D/T value captured on the logs against the User Interface screenshot which would be showing something else.

- Before taking the User Interface screenshot, please perform the following tasks:

(i) please expand your Group so that we can see the nested profiles inside.

(ii) Alter your Taskbar properties so that the tray clock shows the current Date as well as the Time. You can do this by right-clicking on Taskbar > Properties > uncheck "Use small taskbar buttons/icons" (this instructions is applicable to Win 7/8 OS). You can reverse the process to revert once screenshot is captured.

With the UI screenshot and the system date/time clock in addition to the profile's Page 1 log report, we would be able to check exactly what is going on.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Re: SyncBackPro - Failed to copy from source errors

$

Bear in mind that the error "Failed to copy from Source" only indicates direction (i.e. 'to Destination' is implied). However (in most cases), there may be an absence of other indicators, which means the error could be originating from either side (but we won't be able to know for certain which side it's coming from). Some errors could be in reading (Source), others in writing (Destination). The error message returned from Windows often doesn't say.

But there may be other clues that help tell which side it is. For example, in this case, the error message is accompanied with the error code 550 (etc), which is an FTP error code. This means it is error-ing on the FTP server-side.

Coming back to your question, there is likelihood that the issue may be due to length. Based on this article:

http://trac.filezilla-project.org/ticket/4792

it doesn't look like there was any changes since reported nor indication that a fix is available.

Also, this link:

https://forum.filezilla-project.org/viewtopic.php?t=24293#p93782

refers to the same issue.

Given that the MAXPATH of Windows Explorer is 260 characters:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365247%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#maxpath

and that one of the example path\filename quoted in your post here:

/FTP/Features_2014/2014 BASKETBALL ARCHIVE/2014_03_16_MBAS_CONFIDENTIAL/2014_03_16_MBAS_OKLAHOMA_CONFIDENTIAL/2014_03_16_MBAS_OKLAHOMA_CONFIDENTIAL_FLDs/2014_03_16_MBAS_OKLAHOMA_CONFIDENTIAL_DAY_1/FLD MBAS OU CONFIDENTIAL CAM D TAPE 1 031614_Selection sunday_GoPro.mxf

is 268 characters, which are all indications that the culprit may have to do with length.

Did you tried copying the same file while using Windows Explorer? Most likely Explorer would fail as well at such a path\name.

Maybe you've tried a slightly shorter path\name which works via Explorer but errors on the FTP side? Bear in mind that once you add the actual home stub-path (remote disk path that represents the FTP home folder, eg, D:\FTP_UPLOAD_REPOSITORY\ACCOUNT_NAME\...) it would likely exceed 260 characters.

For example,

/FTP/Features_2014/2014 BASKETBALL ARCHIVE/2014_03_16_MBAS_CONFIDENTIAL/2014_03_16_MBAS_OKLAHOMA_CONFIDENTIAL/2014_03_16_MBAS_OKLAHOMA_CONFIDENTIAL_RAWs/2014_03_16_MBAS_OKLAHOMA_CONFIDENTIAL_CAM_A/DAY 1/FLD MBAS OU CONFIDENTIAL CAM A TAPE 1 031614/

is 249 characters. However, we haven't taken into account that the file-name at the end, which if added, would almost certainly exceed 260 even without the stub-path.

So it seems all indications seems to be pointing to length, and this issue is coming from your FTP server, so you may need to take steps to either reduce the length of the path\names or swap to an FTP server which supports higher path lengths.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Re: Execute backup using different user

Hi, my guess is you originally created that profile under your own account ? (the account that you have now given only Read access rights to)

If so, it is likely that at the time when you created a Schedule for it, the authorized user to run that profile was under your user account, and it still is.

You can verify this by going to Windows Task Scheduler and navigate to the SyncBackFree branch and look at the General tab to see which account Task Scheduler is using to execute that task. You can refer to this article for more info on how to navigate to the correct SBF branch in Task Scheduler:

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowledgebase/articles/210940-windows-task-scheduler-fails

You can always login into Windows under the Backup account in order to create a new profile and Schedule in which it would be run as the Backup account. However, bear in mind that profiles created under a different user account may not be visible to your original user account as each profile settings are stored in each of the private local user Application data folder. You can alternatively read the last section in this article for a way to move the profile storage location to a common folder so that any user account will be able to see the profiles created by others, etc.

We've tried layer 2 and we have found it is giving us trouble as far as making a complete sync and constantly updating files that shouldn't need to be updated or just syncing over again . We are trying to sync files on our server into our sharepoint (office 365) site. Can the latest version of syncback do that? If so, what is the proper method to setting that up?

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Move data to new computer

Hi, would like to move or copy approx 100 gb from one computer to another. Existing computer has SyncBackPro 6 on it and I purchased the upgrade to Version 7, assuming I'll install that on the new second computer. The data on the old computer is synced (one way to an external hard drive). I prefer to copy the data from the old computer to the new instead of the copy of it on the external hd. Both computers are wireless behind a router. The external hd is usb to the old computer. Options to get the data on the new computer? I saw step by step instructions on the internet for connecting two computers with a crossover cable via Workgroup and Sharing, etc, but if that's the way to go, maybe there's an easier to follow link? Thanks!

Following up with additional comment. Easiest method, I understand is to connect the external HD that has a copy of the data from the old computer; connect external hd to new and use SyncBackPro 7 on the new computer to (sync or backup?) the data to the new computer. If that is the way to go, then how can I absolutely verify that the copy of the original data on the external HD matches the original data on the old computer? Thanks!

Note: I can't wait weeks for the first backup to finish.
