SyncBackPro (commercial) • Backup Interrupted by Microsoft Update & Restart!!

$

Hi guys

First post here as I'm a new user of the evaluation Pro version.

I configured a profile to back a very large folder to a cloud. I knew the process would take a long time and left the process running overnight. This morning I discovered that Microsoft Automatic Updates and rebooted my computer during the backup.

So my questions:

1. Do I just restart the process and will it start from scratch or will it commence from where it left off? I chose this option.
2. If I shouldn't have restarted the backup again, what should I have done?

Many thanks

John

HI,

I try to backup file from my win 7 pc to an external hard disk, but get a collision error message for the file.
A older and smller file with an identical name already exists on the external hd.
I used the most basic of profiles : just backing up from C:/ to F:/ and canrt imagine where to search fr the error.

Thanks in advance,

ftr

I use the latest version of SyncBackFree but the error already appeared in the previous version .

It is not clear if you are quoting the actual error message (if so, I don't recognize anything you've stated so far as being displayed using exactly that wording) or just 'what you think the error means' ? Maybe state the exact error message and where it appears? Perhaps a screenshot ?

That said, what you describe - a file on one side older or smaller than a same-name file on the other side (or newer/larger, whatever) - is not so much an 'error', more of a 'situation' that is generally not exactly a surprise. SB is designed to find differences between two file-sets and to decide/propose a means of resolving such situations, as per the rules you have set, some of which can involve 'Prompt me'

Option-1 is probably the only choice you have (apart from leaving things part-complete...). There's no resume method if a profile is interrupted by an Abort (or similar, however caused, including your circumstances).

Normally SB will scan again and then copy the 'outstanding balance' of the folder contents based on the results of the current scan. Whether those scan findings are accurate may depend on whether the forced shutdown (of SB, by Windows) gave SB enough time to store relevant information before being closed by Windows. What info SB might need to store depends on what Cloud service you are using, as the REST APIs* for most of them don't allow LastMod stamp to be set on uploaded files. There are various ways SB gets around this (depending on service), but they might have been interrupted by the forced shutdown.

* REST APIs are how 3rd-party vendors have to communicate with the service(s). These APIs often have (deliberate?) limitations compared with processing via provider-supplied clients, browser, etc. Note that I don't use Cloud myself (low upstream rate / personal preferences), so I can only state what I understand to be the case based on what I've read in other posts/articles on here.

(sorry for my English)
(Fixity as in Fixity)

2brightsparks has a great softwares which perform almost everything is necessary for Fixity, but in different applications

Create a copy of files/folders/zip
Compare dates/content/attributes
Create/Check hashes and save them to file

Implement a "check and future check" software for backups/old backups would be great.

Cheers. G

SyncBackPro (commercial) • amazon cloud drive now has modify date for files

I've been using SyncBackPro with Amazon Cloud Drive for sometime and really like it. When viewing my cloud drive via web interface I notice files now have a modify date. When I first began the service and purchased SyncBackPro, there was only a create date. Does SyncBackPro use the modify date that's now available?

The reason I ask is because Amazon hiccuped two or three weeks ago and deleted all my stuff. I had over a terabyte. They restored it, but I had file delete errors and other things which seem to have cleared up. It was a pain. I needed to refresh several folders and SyncBackPro uploaded a lot of stuff again, possibly necessarily. SyncBackPro can be told to update the database without uploading, and I understand that.

Hi,

Currently, there are no changes in the REST API component provided by Amazon Cloud Drive. Thus, SyncBackPro will continue to work in the same way when backing-up files to/from Amazon Cloud Drive.

Thank you.

Hi Swapna, sorry for answering so lately
I saw those files being uploaded to Google drive servers during the Google drive sync process. They were synced to Google Drive folder with SyncBackSE from another folder.
I made a screenshot of those files being uploaded. I will open a ticket, thank you very much for your help Swapna

Have a great day !!

I second the request. "MagentaCloud" is very popular in Germany. It's driven by Deutsche Telekom, the No.1 telecommunication company in Germany. As a customer you'll get 25 GB free storage, non-customers are getting 10 GB.

Hi there!

In the "Profile Settings Window" you can set individual Names for "Source" and "Destination", for example "Mom's PC" and "Family NAS".

Wouldn't it be great so see these labels as optional columns in the "Main Window"? Sometimes it's easier so see the machines name than the path. :-)

Thx!

Dennis

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Can't delete files in Synced folders

$

Hello,

I use SyncBack Free to (among other things) synchronize folders across two different machines, in this case my Desktop PC and my laptop Mac. Using the sync profile, whenever I delete a file or folder SyncBack quickly replaces it because it still exists in the other location. Is there any way around that? Would purchasing SE or Pro give me that ability?

Thanks!

- Mark

The solution that worked was using filters of the form:

/A*/*
/B*/*
..
/M*/*

and then N..Z, same format.

I've used DOS expressions and regular expressions before, and was getting the two types mixed up.

Thanks again, Cliffhanger!

Hi,

Thank you for your suggestion. I will pass this on to our Development team for their review and consideration. As our To-do-list is a long list, we can’t guarantee if and when these features will be implemented.

Hi,

If you're using SyncBackPro you can use a simple script to do this:

Code:

'
' Example script for 2BrightSparks SyncBackPro that adds two extra
' columns in the main window that shows the location labels.
'
' You need to install this script and enable it on the Main Interface
' tab.
'
' SBLang=VBScript
'
'

'
' This is a main interface script
'
Function Description(ByRef ScriptType)
Description = "Show the location labels"
  ScriptType = 4
End Function

Function MainColumnsCount()
  MainColumnsCount = 2
End Function

'
' Column title. Ignore Width and just use the default.
'
Function MainColumnTitle(Col, ByRef Width)
  If Col = 0 Then
    MainColumnTitle = "Source/Left"
  Else
    MainColumnTitle = "Destination/Right"
  End if
End Function

'
' Column text. If its a group then we have no info.
'
Function MainColumnText(Col, IsGroup, ProfileName)
  ' Ignore groups
  If Not IsGroup Then
    If Col = 0 Then
MainColumnText = SBVariables.GetProfileProperty(ProfileName, "SrcLabel", "Source", True)
    Else
MainColumnText = SBVariables.GetProfileProperty(ProfileName, "DestLabel", "Destination", True)
    End if
  Else
    MainColumnText = ""
  End If
End Function

Create a text file and paste the above code into it, save it and rename it so it has a .VBS extension instead of .TXT then install the script into SyncBackPro (via Preferences->Scripts in the main menu). Once the script is installed and enabled you'll need to exit SyncBackPro and start it again.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Re: Can't delete files in Synced folders

Hi,

In SyncBackFree, the Sync profile type is called BasicSync, or Basic Synchronization, and this is different in commercial version (SyncBackSE or SyncBackPro) which is called SmartSync, or Smart Synchronization.

The key difference is that BasicSync does not keep a database to remember which files are deleted or changed on either side like SmartSync does. Therefore, in a BasicSync profile if a file is present on one side – you can either configure the profile to delete the file from that side or copy it to the other side. You can read this forum post for more details:

http://www.2brightsparks.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=7612

However, a SmartSync profile (in SyncBackSE/Pro) copies/deletes files in both directions. It also keeps a history of where files were during the last synchronization. This allows for much finer control over what actions to take based on what has changed in the meantime. Please read this link for more details about Basic Synchronization and Smart Synchronization in SyncBack.

http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/help/synchronize.htm

Thank you.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Group Variable Not Expanded By Child Profile

$

Hi there,

I have searched and also perused the help, and I'm sure this should be working as per how the help file describes.

I have a group that contains two child profiles and each one, uses a variable (FOLDERNAME) that is defined in the parent group.

If I run the child profiles individually, the variable is expanded and the profile uses the stored value to correctly build a source path for the the copy.

If I run the parent profile, both profiles are parsed, but no files are copied/found and I find a folder called %FOLDERNAME% has been built at the same tree level as when the required source folder is. (if the variable was to be expanded correctly)

The profiles have no variables defined, so the one at the parent group level should be being inherited by the child profiles ?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Kev

Hi all

I've been backing up my files to Amazon Cloud Drive using SBP, a couple of niggles but the main one that has me beat just now is this error:

HTTP/1.1 504 GATEWAY_TIMEOUT

From the log:
Failed to copy from Source : HTTP/1.1 504 GATEWAY_TIMEOUT

Sent 16/05/2016 20:47:55: [binary]
Recv 16/05/2016 20:48:55: HTTP/1.1 504 GATEWAY_TIMEOUT

[E] IsRateLimited - Exception = "HTTP/1.1 504 GATEWAY_TIMEOUT" - ClassName = "EIdHTTPProtocolException"
[E] IsRateLimited - Error Message = "" - Error Code = "504"
[E] Given up retrying
[E] IsRateLimited: NO

This consistently happens for 59 files!

I've opened the files on my local PC and they seem just fine.

Any help/ideas appreciated.

Regards

John

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Re: Group Variable Not Expanded By Child Profile

$

I don't seem to be able to replicate that, but I may have misunderstood your description. If I define a Variable in the Group as

Code:

FOLDERNAME =  ChosenByGrpVar

and I set the Sources of 2 test child profiles in the Group as

Q:\%FOLDERNAME%\1\
Q:\%FOLDERNAME%\2\

respectively (so I can tell which profile created subfolder ...\1\ and which created ...\2\ ). If I then run the child profiles individually 'from' the Group's inner listing (that is, individually Run the link/s to the profile/s accessible 'inside' the Group), so the profile knows which Group to inherit the value from, it works - a folder \ChosenByGrpVar\ and subfolder \1\ are created on drive Q by profile #1, and similarly for profile #2 (also run individually 'from within' the Group). So far, same as you, but if I then delete those just-created folders and test again by running the Group itself, it works exactly the same (i.e. correctly) also here...

The only way I can get what you describe is if I arrange for Pro (via UI's Preferences menu, top option) to list all profiles in their Groups (if applicable) and also list all profiles individually as stand-alone entries in the profile list. If I then Run each child profile via its stand-alone list entry, then yes, this time I get Q:\%FOLDERNAME%\1\ created by profile #1, and Q:\%FOLDERNAME%\2\ used/created by profile #2. This is to be expected, because by using the stand-alone entry/s, Pro has been given no clues where to look to evaluate any Group Variable. Running it as a stand-alone profile doesn't imply/supply a 'drill-up' path to a specific Group - bearing in mind that any given profile can be in multiple Groups - or, none.

But I can't get it to create a folder on Q called %FOLDERNAME% (literally) if I run either profile using its Group entry/link or by running the actual Group itself.

MY tests were with the latest Pro v7.6.8.0 - not sure what you're using? If not, suggest first update and try again. If you still have a problem, it will likely need a support tech to review your settings, so suggest create a Support Zip of the Group (select the Group, then do Help menu > Technical Support Wizard > OK). This will pack a copy of your child profiles into the Zip as well as a copy of the Group profile, and it should auto-open a link to the support system - just use the Contact Support link upper right, describe your issue and attach the Support Zip

Note: even if you give a full description in the ticket, suggest include a link in the ticket to this forum thread

Hi,

I would suggest submitting a support ticket for your failing profile by using the Contact Support in the below link in this article and attach the zip file.
http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... ation-file

If your Zip is over 30MB, contact us for alternate instructions, advising the actual size. Do not try to attach to the ticket!

You haven't mentioned which version of SyncBackPro you are using, so I will suggest installing and trying the latest version (v7.6.8.0 as of now) from the following link, if you haven't done so yet, before submitting the support ticket.
http://www.2brightsparks.com/download-syncbackpro.html

Do not post (nor links to) Support Zips on this open forum.

Thanks,
Kostas

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Help with backup script

$

Hello, I am trying to configure a backup and need a little help.

I have a backup system, 2 trays (500 GB drives) that insert into my small server. I rotate them each morning at about 8am. Currently I have Syncback Pro configured to do nightly backups at 1 AM with the following settings;

-perform fast backup
-delete all the files and folders on destination...
-force a rescan when Destination directory "is not equal" = C:\

source: e:\
destination: %LABEL=Backup Disc%\Backup\%DAYOFWEEK%\backup.zip

First off, I was wondering if my fast backup settings are correct. I want a full backup each time without looking at the last backup.
Second, could i change this and remove the %DAYSOFWEEK% and have all backups in the root Backup folder, but only keep 3?
