SyncBackFree (freeware) • Re: Win10Pro SyncBackFree

This is out of left field, but Keren’s Replicator, a similar type program to SBF doesn’t like W10 and SBF may have similar compatibility issues. See other topics on the forum site which talk about bugs using SBF and W10.
Here’s a couple of suggestions that may help
1.Find the .exe file which launches SBF (possibly at "C:\Program Files (x86)\2BrightSparks\SyncBackFree\SyncBackFree.exe") and double click on it. If the program launches from that source, then the problem is the link between your tray icon and its target file. Delete the existing tray icon and create a new one. Creating the new tray icon should also create a new (correct) link and with a correct link, SBF should launch just as it would by double clicking on the .exe file as described above.
If SBF doesn’t launch directly from SyncBackFree.exe, then:
2.2. Uninstall SBF, download a new copy of the SBF installation file from the author’s site and reinstall SBF from the newly downloaded installation file. If that doesn’t fix all problems, then it looks like a W10/SBF compatibility issue.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Scheduler does not work

Hello everyone

My synckbackfree schedule works when computer is turned on. But if the computer is turned off at the scheduled time, next time i turn on pc, it won't run even tough the option "run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed" is enabled.

One hint on what may be wrong is the message "The profile name given does not exist (0xFFFFFF97)" in red. I tried to export the profile, delete, and import it again but the same thing happens. Anyone can help?

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Remote Server Daily Report of Works

Howdy Everyone,

Have been Using V6 / V7 for a couple of years for my backups, and I would like to say it works great, it does what it is supposed to do, and creates very few dramas for me.

I've recently got my hands on a ML10V2 HP Proliant, and have put two 5TB Drives in mirror on windows 2008R2 x64, I am going to put this at home, to simply pull the latest mirror from the main server here, via a PPTP link between the office and home, It works fine, its a little slow on the ADSL links, but I was wondering if anyone has a script/method/howto on how to create and email a report of the daily activities (not the actual full reports etc) Simply a report to say it ran , and it worked?

I know its going to be a simply answer, but it only seems to send emails on 'errors'

Thanks!!

Hi, it sounds like you have enabled the setting ''Only send the email if an error occurs' at start of

Modify profile > Expert mode > Log > Advanced

Turn that option off (uncheck it), and consider selecting instead the option further down that same settings page to 'Only attach the log file if an error occurs'. This combination will send an email for all runs, whether Success or otherwise, but only attach the log (optionally compressed/encrypted - see relevant/related options for this on same page) if there was a problem. Press F1 with Log > Advanced page open for contextual Help.

Additionally, if the run did not succeed 100%, then the email Subject will be prefixed with the tag '[Failed] ' (there may also be a brief reason such as '(Scan Failure) ' appended to the prefix tag). So, if you use the 'only attach log on error' option you can rely on an email that doesn't include either a tag in the Subject or an attached log as having been a Success. Conversely, if there was not 100% Success, the email should have both a tag in the Subject to say so and a log attached with details.

Note there is no automatic tagging of 'Success' in the Subject (only the absence of anything indicating the opposite). If you do not want to rely on the absence of a Failure tag (or a log) to 'prove' a Success, you can optionally make a custom email body (bottom option on same Log > Advanced settings page) with a suitable caption such as "Result: " in tandem with the built-in SB Variable %RUNRESULT%

Help > Search > "variables" (without the quotes) > Emailing the log section for other values you can notify in a custom mail body. You need to devise and add your own optional caption/s, as above.

If you don't actually want a log to be emailed under any circumstances, there is an option on Log > Advanced to 'Do not [i.e, ever] attach the log file, just send the email body'. In this case, you can rely on the other textual options mentioned above to identify if the run was a Success or a Failure, but you may need to manually access the log by other means to find out the full details if there was a problem.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • The dreaded "Cannot access the file" for the system registry

Hi -

I'm a longtime (10 yrs) happy Syncback user. I have a problem I can't solve. I've just noticed that, starting on May 25th, my SyncbackPro is no longer succeeding at copying the major registry files in /Windows/System32/config, nor is it copying the various C:/Users/*/ntuser.dat files. Needless to say, this is a bad thing! Before that, the copy was working.

A typical error message in the backup log file is:

"Failed to copy from C : File is locked (C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE): The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".

- Before May 25th, Syncback was copying these locked registry files with ease.
- Changing the backup method between "Standard Windows file copying" and "Backup read/write file copying" makes no difference (at least to these files.)
- I don't recall making any operating system changes on May 24th.
- No changes have occurred in the SynbackPro install tree since January, 2017.
- The "About SyncBackPro" box says I'm running V7.6.50.0.

Help!

Is there currently a way to archive this?

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Error when trying to Backup From Windows 10 to Centos 6

I am running Windows 10 and trying to backup files to a Centos 6 system over samba.

It appears that I am getting a slew of errors for files that are on the Destination Centos 6 Backup share but not on the Windows Source:

Failed to copy from Source : Windows error 5: Access is denied

This is the description of my profile:

Files will be copied from Source (C:\Users\user\) to Destination (\\X.X.X.X\Backup\User Backup\user\).
If the same file has been changed on both Source and Destination then the file on Source will replace the file on Destination.
Files only on Source are copied to Destination.
If a file is only on Destination then it is ignored.
If an empty directory is only on Source then the decision is automated.
If an empty directory is only on Destination then the decision is automated.
The following files/folders will be ignored: *.iso,*\APPDATA\*,"*\Google Drive\*",*\ntuser.dat,*\ntuser.dat*.*,*\ntuser.dat.log*,*\OneDrive\*
Only the following files/folders will be included: *\,*\*
The profile is stored in C:\Users\user\appdata\....

I have full access from my Windows 10 Computer to the CentOS Share - I can add/delete/create/modify both files and folders. And I of course have full access to my files and folders on my windows account.

This has been going on for some time and I am at a loss and will be looking for another solution if I can't get this figured out very soon although I have used it almost since its inception and love the product.

Any suggestions most welcomed!

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Re: Fast Backups copying too many files - again

Hello

This problem seems to have re-surfaced again today after I updated from v8.2.11.0 to v8.2.18.0 this morning.

When I ran a profile on my laptop this morning, it copied many files that haven't changed recently, which is the same symptom that I had before.

So to try and capture what's happening, I thought I'd try a Simulated Run on a similar profile on my desktop pc instead.

On my desktop pc, I have a Fast Backup profilethat copies changed files from my pc to a usb pen drive - I last ran this profile 4 days ago (18/08/2017) and the copied files were as expected.

So, I right-clicked this profile and selected Simulated Run - the Differences window popped up showing 14 files were different on the source compared to the destination, 5 of which are valid differences as I've changed these files since the last backup, but the other 9 files haven't changed for several months.

Windows File Explorer shows the date and time for the 9 unchanged source files and the 9 destination files as being identical, but Syncback thinks they differ by 2 hours.

Can you help please ?

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Re: SyncBackSE to replace Windows Briefcase?

Swapna,

I got back from a two week trip, and used SyncBack Lite to do some work. It behaved flawlessly. Today, I had run out of evaluation time, so I purchased SyncBackLite. Because of the difficulties I had in evaluating the SyncBackLite profiles in SyncBackSE, I was never able to demonstrate that SE had any advantage over Lite for my purposes, on my system. It may have, but I just couldn't see it.
So I'm going to stop here and call it a success. I removed the trial version of SE from my computer.

Thank you for your assistance.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • get back the previous data

Hello,

I have been using SyncBack free with success for many years. But yesterday I made a huge mistake with the backup.

Usually, the data of my regular laptop are saved on my external drive (one way).
This external drive is only used for back up.
In April, I was forced to use a spare. So, for a few days, I used the spare by working directly on the external drive.
In April 26, when I got back my regular laptop, I changed the regular parameters of syncBack so to get back the data: data from external drive saved on regular laptop.
The issue is that yesterday, I made a new backup so to save the data of my regular computer,... but I forgot to change the parameters. Meaning, I saved again the data of my external drive on my computer.

Consequences : all the files of my regular laptop, which had been modified from April 26, up to now, have been replaced by the old versions dated before April 26. It is horrible ! Many important files are concerned !!

1) How can I get back the recent versions ? Is there any other solutions ?
2) How can I get the list of the files which have been replaced ?

Could you please help me

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Re: get back the previous data

Hi,

How can I get back the recent versions? Is there any other solutions?

Sorry, but it’s not possible with SyncBackFree.

To avoid such situations in the future, you can consider using Versioning option supported in SyncBackPro/SE. This feature will create a version of a file before the file (at your Source/Destination) is replaced, deleted or moved and store the version files in a hidden folder within the scope of the profile's Source/Destination path. In case, you want to rollback your source/destination files, then you can easily do so from version files. Refer to this KB article for the step-by-step instructions to do this:

http://support.2brightsparks.com/knowle ... sion-files

In addition, please read the Help file for more details about this option. With Versioning settings page opened, press F1 to open the contextual help.

How can I get the list of the files which have been replaced?

You can refer to the Log file (select the profile from the SyncBack, right click and select View Log) > ‘Copied, deleted, renamed, and changed’ section for the list of files copied during the last run.

Thank you

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Re: Preserving "Date Created" when doing a Mirror

Note that SyncBack does not support copying Last Modification date/time attribute for folders, as the last modified date/time stamp of a folder is controlled by Windows. Windows will automatically change the Last Modification date and time of a directory if any of its files or sub-directories are changed.

Hello I'm a long time user, first time poster. I've just moved across 2 rather large folders to a new drive with SyncBack that took over 10 hours. Then realised I wanted to preserve the folder date/times. I almost went to use a disk to disk image with an imaging product but looked into Microsoft's robocopy (command line) to solve this problem.

Once the folders have finished copy run this command line where c:\Audio is source and x:\Audio is destination:
robocopy c:\Audio x:\Audio /E /DCOPY:T

This will update your folder date/time with the source folders date/time. Yes this can be performed AFTER the initial copy has already been made.

Also, out of interest, if you needed to ONLY recreate the folder structure and retain their date/time stamp without copying and any files:
robocopy c:\Audio x:\Audio /E /DCOPY:T *.zzz

The *.zzz will try to copy all *.zzz files (and not find any) but STILL create the folders and retain their correct folder structure.

Hi,

To add a profile to a group:

Modify group > Main > select the profile (that you want to add to the group) from the left list box, and click on right arrow button > the profile is moved to the right list box and will be added to the group

Thank you.
