SyncBackSE (commercial) • *.db-wal *.db-shm errors, v 8.2.18.0

Just installed v8.2.18.0 over older version and made my usual 'mirror' exercise but am getting 2 errors relating to files of SyncbackSE. Errors relate to *.db-wal and *.db-shm. Not seen these errors before and am not saying it is related to v8.2.18.0. Has anyone got a tip to try?

I have been copying to dropbox for a LONG time. It's been flawless.

The last 4 backups have resulted in the following error:
Failed to scan files: SQLite3 Error 11 - database disk image is malformed (Destination)

Any suggestions on how to remedy the failure and get the backups flowing again?

I am running SBPro 7.3.2.9.

Hi,

The two files *.db-shm and *.db-wal are created by SyncBackSE V8.2.18.0 to fix ‘SQLite3 Error 5’ with selections DB. You can refer to SyncBackSE change history here:

https://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/changes.html

Since those 2 temporary files are present during the scan phase and deleted before the copy phase, the profile may fail with “The system cannot find the file specified” error. To resolve this error, you can add exclusion filters (*\*.db-shm and *\*.db-wal) to Modify > Simple > Change Filter settings page to exclude those 2 files from your backup selections.

Thank you.

I think you need software more dedicated to 'filing/storage organization' than 'making backup copies of the filed/stored data' (which is what SB is basically designed for). I haven't tried it myself (I don't need the facility) but this freeware utility certainly sounds like it can do what you want (and more). It may take a little work configuring the program correctly to do what you want, but from a quick look at their forum you are not alone / others have the same requirement, and you may find examples & how-to's if you look for them.

(Note that I don't plan to install this, and can't offer assistance in configuring it; above info supplied without prejudice or 'warranty')

Hi,

Since the Syncbackfree V8.218.0 I become everytime the next errors messages:
\SyncBackFree\SyncBackFree_sel.db-shm
and
\SyncBackFree\SyncBackFree_sel.db-wal
with comment:
Copy of PC: File (2) can not be copied: The system could not find the specified file. The file may have been deleted in the time between scanning and the attempt to copy failed.

So take a look on the location and those files aren't in the folder

Using Windows10 Pro up-to-date

How to fix this

Thanks in advance de Pat.

Hi!
Can someone tell me if I can, and how, to make a backup profile that copies from two different volumes, some folders from hard disk C and some from
hard disk D to hard disk E? All should happen so, that Source always overwrites destination (files and folders)?

please help!

Hi,

If you are using SyncBackSE V7/V8, you can use SyncBack Touch with SyncBackSE to backup files from two different local drives (e.g. C and D) to a destination drive. SyncBack Touch acts as a remote agent for SyncBackSE (V7/8) and allows it to remotely access a device’s file system to perform backup/restore and sync operations over the network.

Install SyncBack Touch on the same PC where SyncBackSE is installed (as you want to backup files from multiple drives on the same computer), and create a profile in SE with Source pointing to Touch and Destination to your backup drive. Click on the "Choose sub-directories and files" button and select the list of files/folders you want to copy from multiple drives and deselect the remaining. Then run the profile to backup files from multiple drives on source to destination.

Please note that each SyncBackSE V7/8 license purchase comes with two complimentary connections to SyncBack Touch (if more are required, Touch licenses can be purchased separately). You can refer to these articles for more details on how to create and configure a Touch profile:

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Reparse point woes

$
0
0
Greetings!

I'm currently evaluating SyncBackPro as a replacement for CrashPlan Home.

I found the following problem with switching over:
SyncBackPro seems to be unable to provide a moderate intermediate setting for reparse point handling.

That means:
I can either chose to skip/ignore/copy-as-is for junctions, symlinks etc., which will copy few links as-is and will ignore most.
Or I can chose to handle them as what they represent (files/folders) and backup all their content.

I'll shortly describe my setup to give a better understanding about why none of the above settings works well for me:

I have several external RAID5 enclosures with mixed data "cluttered" around them. Which data gets stored on which external enclosure depends on the free space on the enclosures. If one enclosure runs full, I redistribute data around the enclosures to get about an equal percentage of free space again on all of them.

An example:
At the beginning, the distribution might have been something like
Enclosure 1: Pictures
Enclosure 2: Videos
Enclosure 3: Music

Now we will assume that "Videos" start to exceed the size of Enclosure 2, so data was redistributed:
Enclosure 1: Pictures + Videos\Documentary
Enclosure 2: Videos\Entertainment
Enclosure 3: Music

Now assume that "Videos\Entertainment" exceeds the size of enclosure 2 again, so we get a new one and redistribute again:
Enclosure 1: Pictures + Videos\Documentary
Enclosure 2: Videos\Entertainment\TV Series
Enclosure 3: Music
Enclosure 4: Videos\Entertainment\Movies

and so on and so on, you get the idea I hope.

The important information of this part is:
It would be counter-productive to create backup sets for the enclosures as it, as their content varies over time. Data would need to be deleted or uselessly re-uploaded again and again.

In addition they are also not mounted on drive letters but into empty NTFS folders (= reparse points).
I would quickly run out of drive letters if I would mount every sh*t on one.

Now I mentioned "cluttered" above.
Actually I'm a typical orderly minded German, so in fact, the data is not really cluttered when accessing it!

I've got an internal RAID5, the volume "Data" mounted as E:

It contains real data (files/folders), but also junctions to the external enclosures, e.g.
E:\Data\Music -> Enclosure 3: Music
E:\Data\Pictures -> Enclosure 1: Pictures
E:\Data\Videos\Documentary -> Enclosure 1: Videos\Documentary
E:\Data\Videos\Movies -> Enclosure 4: Videos\Entertainment\Movies
E:\Data\Videos\TV series -> Enclosure 2: Videos\Entertainment\TV Series

When I re-distribute data across my external enclosures, I only have to adjust these "root" junctions and all data remains accessible at the very same place.

So obviously it's E:\Data which I want to back up.

That way it doesn't matter if I have to add a 5th enclosure and re-distribute data again later, for the backup of E:\Data everything stays unchanged (except that the amount of data is growing).

Now come(s) the limitation(s) of SyncBackPro:
I can either have SyncBackPro ignore junctions, so I do not get a complete backup, E:\Data\Music and so on would be missing -> No option

Or I have to back up junctions as their content, so I do get a backup of E:\Data\Music and so on too, but a lot of dupes across my backup set due to all other junctions also getting backed up as their content rather than their target!

What I would need and as far as I have recognized in other forum posts some other people too:
A setting which allows to
- follow external links
but
- store internal links as-is
at the same time.
Where external and internal refers to the backup set.

Example:
If I select "E:\Data" then the junction E:\Data\Music -> Enclosure 3: Music gets followed, because it points outside the backup set, while the junction
"E:\Data\Videos\Movies\X-Files" -> "E:\Data\Videos\TV series \X-Files\X-Files - The Movie" would get stored as-is, as the target is within the backup set (= backed up already).

That means in addition to
- Ignore most links, potentially ignoring plenty of data
- Store everything as its content, produce lots of dupes

A third setting would be appreciated:
- Follow links to additional data but avoid dupes (links to data already selected for backup)

Also, ALL junctions/links/... should be backed up, no matter if its a symlink, a junction, a hardlink or whatever, it should never be ignored.
Even if the target (Cloud Drive, SFTP, FAT32) does not support storing the reparse point as is, there's always a way to store it inside a zip, even if it's just the instructions to recreate it.

If I restored a backup of my data and it does not contain the links anymore, while not losing data itself, I would have lots of work making it all accessible again by manually reproducing the links.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Synchronisation of a NTFS volume using EFS encryption for certain folders

I have synced:

* D:\Documents\, where D is a NTFS volume using EFS encryption (Win7) for certain folders (e.g. D:\Documents\Private\)

to

* H:\Documents\, where H is a NTFS volume too

On the destination, I noticed that some files are encrypted, but not all, it seems quite random: some files in D:\Documents\Private\ are encrypted (they are displayed with green filename in the explorer), some are not.

How does SyncBack work with NTFS volumes using EFS encryption for certain folders?

I don't see an Edit option on the forum (maybe my reputation is too low?).

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Slow scan source?

Hi all,
I'm testing SyncBackPro; I created a simple job that mirrors two folders, one local and one remote (smb).
Scanning local folder, about 8 million files, takes too long. It starts pretty well, with about a thousand files per second but after a few minutes performances decay up to a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 50 files per second.
I don't think the problem is related to my server, because other backup software scans up to 5K files per second..
I have not found anything useful to increase speed in the properties of the job..
Thanks

Hello,

Don't know if this is the right place for this, just a suggestion to add a duration column in the available columns. Like the time it took for last backup. Can be especially useful when working with online destinations.

Thanks :)

SyncBackSE (commercial) • After creating a "Mirror profile" with "Rapid save" option : How to tell SyncBack that FTP destination is up to date ?

Hello.

I re-installed SyncBack SE.
I'm re-creating a Mirror Profile.
Destination is FTP without MDTDM command.
So, I've checked "Rapid Save" option in the profile.

The profile is new, but I know, the destination is up to date.
How can I tell that to SyncBack SE ?
If I can't, it trys to copy all files to destination at first run.

Thank you for advance.
Frederic.

Hi, by "Rapid Save" I guess you mean the option/settings normally referred to in the original English Help/interface as 'Fast Backup'.

Run your Fast Backup profile so that the Differences window appears, showing that the files on the FTP server appear to be different to the corresponding files on your Source. Make very sure* that all files listed are shown as present on both sides with suggested Action as Copy To Right/Destination, and then right-click the grid and click Select All from the pop-up menu. Next, right-click the grid again and select Unchanged from the pop-up menu. You can now click Continue, and instead of actually trying to copy the files, the profile will proceed to build & store a Fast Backup database of the files that records the details of the Destination files as having the same date (etc) as the Source copies. It therefore will not (re)copy files to the Destination unless/until the Source copies change their attributes, or you manually tell the profile to discard the database and build a new one (you click the Force Rescan button on the Fast Backup settings page) or conditions arise that Force Rescan automatically

* the Unchanged option only appears if the profile is set to make a Fast Backup, all the selected files are shown as being present on both sides already and all the selected files have their Action initially shown as Copy To Destination. If you have some files that are (for example) only on the Source at the time of the run, selecting a file present on 'one side only' then trying to set it to be Unchanged (in other word, 'same as file on other side') is inappropriate (because there is no file on the other side), and the Unchanged option will not be listed. Likewise, if you have some files on the FTP side only, and because the profile is a Mirror it wants to delete them, the Unchanged option will again not be available if such files are selected, because the option is inappropriate for such files. If you do have mixed-mode files (some on both sides, some on one side only, and so on), you cannot use Select All and you will instead need to cherry-pick as appropriate (select the required files on both sides and de-select those on one side only). You can use the usual Ctrl-click and Shift-click methods to de/select groups of files. Once you have only appropriate files selected, the option to set selected files as Unchanged will become available.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • Help calculating transaction costs for Azure, S3 Glacier, etc.

I have 11TB of data I currently have in Amazon Cloud Storage that is grandfathered until April 2018 when they will left my unlimited storage pricing. Their current pricing is nuts so I want t look at B2, Glacier and Azure Archive. The problem is most of the services have transactions cots around PUTs, Writes, etc that will impact the overall cost. I have many files int he 2-5GB range and also in the 10-40GB range. With Synback Pro if I am writing a file does that single file upload count as a single write/put, etc. of is it based on the transfer block size that Syncback Pro uses? I am looking for the best service to handle basically backing up my movie collection that is over 450 MP4s and 345 MKVs so they will not be accessed unless my NAS at home gets destroyed.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Setting up automatic VPN connection

Part of my backup routine requires 2 profiles to be run consecutively over a VPN connection to an off-site computer.

Is there some way I can set up SyncBack SE to connect automatically to the other computer through the VPN (which I have a connection for in Win10) or via the address to the other computer? Or should I enable and disable the VPN connection using Task Manager (and if yes, please provide some guidance on doing that).

I'm an experienced Windows user, but my networking knowledge isn't that great since I'm a standalone user at home.

thanks,

Henwin
