SyncBackPro (commercial) • Dropbox - one profile works, others time out

Hi, I'm using commercial SBP 8.9.15, and a paid-for DropBox account.

I keep my media on a local NAS box and wish to use DropBox to keep an off-site copy of my stuff and use SBP to keep it all backed up.

This is all working well, I have created four separate profiles to copy different bits of data to DB, and it's all copied up ok.

But...

When it comes to rerunning a backup, three of the profiles consistently time out (sticks on Step 8 with a "cloud is throttling..." and after 10 mins it dies on me), yet the fourth one consistently works without a hitch!

I've gone through the settings of the profiles with a fine tooth comb and can't see any difference between settings other than of course the source and destination directories.

I have even waited 24 hours, then run just the smallest of the three failing profiles by itself, but straight away it sticks at Step 8. Run the fourth one and it reads the cloud directory and continues to sync straight away.

I have attached a screenshot of what SBP looks like when I'm trying to do this.

Any ideas??

SyncBackPro (commercial) • File skipped (and un-ticked in "Choose..") for no apparent reason

I just noticed before a backup that I happened to make manually that SB (v9) ignored a file on syncing two drives. It's a normal .zip file with no special attributes, and was a new file only present on the Source. When I got into "Choose files/directories" the file was unchecked(??) even though the folder should include new files/folders there.

How could this happened? I went through the help page "Most common reasons for files being skipped" but none of them applied, I did not change any of the default compare options.

SOLVED, it was just an unnoticed filter... It would be neat if this window would somehow show why an item is unmarked - either handpicked selection or affected by a wildcard filter (with eg different colors)
Also a better forum engine here, that would enable to mark a thread as "solved".

Same problem - After an in-situ upgrade from Windows 7 Pro 64 bit to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, my scheduled profiles are no longer scheduled.
When I try to schedule them it asks for a Windows logon password, which I enter correctly but I get an Access Denied dialog box ...

Any path I enter now only goes only to the internal storage ("phone"). ... Yeah, I gathered that path from ES File Explorer, /mnt/sdcard/ext_sd.

SyncBackSE (commercial) • Synchronize files matching a certain name mask, but omitting one directory name, in multiple directories

Hello all! It's been a very long time since I posted here; I have very thoroughly enjoyed my usage of SyncBack, for the myriad ways that it enables me to, well, synchronize and backup whatever I have; it handles it all well. It's extremely powerful, and I love it a great deal.

Now, I have a use case that I hope has a solution in SyncBack, and while it is similar to other tasks I have for the program that are accomplished with flying colors, it's a little different from those.

There are certain games I have – these are older MS-DOS games, anywhere from the mid-80s up to the mid-90s (yes, I'm quite an old-school gaming fan) that I have purchased from GOG, Steam and other places, and all placed off of one directory so that I can easily access them via the excellent front-end LaunchBox – whose save data are distributed throughout the programs' directory structures, and don't follow any standard, except that they have the word 'SAVE' somewhere either in their name or extension or their containing folder. There are also outlier files that are not relevant to the saved data that happen to be called, strangely enough, 'New save data' which are kept in the directory known as 'DOSBOX'. I wish to exclude those files.

I've actually accomplished a Robocopy (command-line robust copy utility) operation doing exactly what I want and was looking to "port" the operation over to SyncBack, so as to have more flexibility in how and when this is accomplished. Having already done it once, I specified the /L and /LOG parameters so the operation is merely logged instead of done again, so I could capture the opening of the command which contains my input and the parameters used. Here it is:

CODE:

Started : Saturday, February 15, 2020 6:27:31 AM Source : I:\Games\LaunchBox\Games\MS-DOS\ [I entered this directory into the command] Dest : E:\Sneaker Network - game saves\MS-DOS\ [I was in this directory, so didn't enter it into the command] Files : *SAVE*.* [all files that begin with, end with and that contain the word save, along with all folders that have those names as long as there's something in them; this also means that folders that have new save game data since I ran the task last would be counted in the next running of the task] Exc Dirs : DOSBOX [to leave out the 0 length 'new save data' file] Options : /L /S /DCOPY:DA /COPY:DAT /R:1000000 /W:30
[I actually only used the /L and /S parameters shown above, and the rest are the defaults inserted by the program automatically]

An example which I hope will show clearly what I want: if I'm cranking up the classic text adventure game Zork and getting into a fairly lengthy Exploration of the Great Underground Empire (TM), and save my progress, that file is stored in the 'SAVE' folder off the main game folder, with the name 'ZORK1.DAT'. Then, if I want to hop over to the very old-school side scrolling action game Duke Nukem, zap some aliens, complete the first level and want to save my progress, that would be saved in the main game directory with the name 'SAVEDT.DN1'. I wish to have those synchronized, along with all the others similarly named and placed in the MS-DOS games folder, with their folder structure maintained.

I actually tried creating a new task within SyncBack for this, but it seems I just can't get the filter operations right to select exactly the files and directories I want; no matter what I enter, all directories are excluded or included; I can't "wrangle" it, is what I mean.

Anyway, it's not really a vital thing, since as I said I already did the operation once, but it would really be nice to have all my saved games for these older games in line and being backed up with all the others as I use them without having to enter a command every time.

I hope you all are having a wonderful day, and look forward to hearing an answer at your earliest convenience. If you need more details, I'll be happy to provide them. Take care!

(I'd edit my post but I don't know how in this interface)

After a bit of investigation, I found that my robocopy input did NOT capture directories that were named "*SAVE*.*" and had files named something else within them, so that's definitely something I'd like to do)

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Preserving creation date

I am still very new at this and created a backup of a modest folder, then checked if the creation date was preserved. It was not.
So, can someone help and explain which setting I should use to preserve the original creation date? I need this to prove files were created on the original dates.
Thanks in advance! :)

SyncBackFree (freeware) • Need many more clicks now in version 9 ...

I am using SyncBack Free for many many years now, to sync my PC with my notebook, and always found it to be great.

When syncing I choose on every file what to do (I have the German version): In all previous versions I had separate buttons for "Überspringen", "Kopieren nach Quelle" or "Löschen von Ziel", so it was ONE click for every file.

In the new version there is suddenly a scrolldown menu??? So I have first to click on the scrolldown menu (click #1), then select the proper entry, for example "Überspringen" (click #2) and then finally confirm the selection with "Ok" (click #3).

I can absolutely not understand how anyone in development could have such an idea. This makes the new version much more complicated and time-consuming than all the versions before ...

I am really shocked.

SyncBackPro (commercial) • What is faster - backup or mirror ?

$

I know, it's pretty much a newbie question, but I've always wondered (though never tested): what is faster, a 'standard' backup or mirror?

or better:
does a mirror first check whether or not the files exist on destination and if so, whether they are newer or the same, so only newer files are being copied or does mirror copy all, no matter whether identical files exist on destination, which obviously takes more time.

Personally.. whilst not being sure whether or not it is the best way to go, I have always used mirror.
Background is that often I rename files and subsequently move them to other sub folders (named after a subject)

To avoid duplicates the backup profile would then include deleting files when they do not exist on destination, being more or less similar to a mirror profile (from my non-expert point of view).

Thanks.

To me, backup is faster.

Mirror also has to check each file on the destination and if it's not on the source, remove it from the source directory as well as if files are on the source but not destination.

Backup doesn't check for files on the destination but not in the source, it just checks if a file is on the source but not on the destination and copies it.

SyncBackFree (freeware) • How do I find out what are the differences between two mirrored drives?

$

There's two 3 TB (2.72 TB) external USB drives, same kind, one is a mirror of the other, but there is around 3 gigabytes difference between them. The original has 659 GB free, the mirrored one has 656 GB free. I wonder if perhaps it has something to do with, well, how do I explain?... When I rearrange files on the original and mirror the matter to the back-up drive, the SyncBack profile then has RED entries for the old files that can be "cleaned up". There's so much stuff on the drives, I can't actually check every folder to see if there's any RED entries in them to be cleaned up, so is there a way to see all the RED entries in the profile/drive without having to check each individual folder? Maybe that would fix this issue?

"Run After" script passes test mode, fails on actual profile run. This is an autohotkey script which shutdowns the server that the completed backup just went to. Works great when you hit the test button; however, when the profile actually runs, nothing happens. Anybody run into this before? Thanks!

All of the help files suggest SB Pro will work w/ Amazon S3 and all the help files show S3 in the list of cloud options.

But in my newly-purchased-to-use-S3 version, there's no S3 shown in the list of cloud options.

Do I have a bug or is there a trick I'm missing?

For your information
With the latest version, some files can't be copied. I have a "out a memory" error.

The back up don't use lot of files (max 50 files), but 1 or 2 always have an error, I have to copy them manually.

Luckily, the latest beta 9.3.2 does not have this bug.

"Amazon Cloud Drive no longer available (August 2019)
Post by mickyj » Fri Aug 23, 2019 5:14 am

Starting August 2019, Amazon has stopped all 3rd party access to their Amazon Cloud Drive service. This means SyncBackPro (and all other non-Amazon software) is unable to login to the service or upload/download files to and from it. If you have files on Amazon Cloud Drive you will need to use their web interface (https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive), or the Amazon Photos Desktop App (https://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=16409408011), to retrieve your files. For the next release of SyncBackPro (V9 and V8), the Amazon Cloud Drive functionality will be removed.

Is this profile ran from a schedule? If so there may be some settings in the scheduler that need changing.
